That's what I always notice when I try Cubase again. Lots of legacy stuff in there. Had the same with Sonar X1. There were always 3 or 4 ways to do something. Not good.

Bitwig leaves nothing to be desired GUI-wise for me. But I will admit that as a former Logic user, who moved to Live at Logic 7, I do sometimes see pictures of the GUI these days and somewhat miss what remains of the look and also think how nice it looks these days.

Cubase 9.5.
Steinberg must have designed 10 on a Friday afternoon.

Studio One has for me the most usable GUI out of all of them. But as someone has said it is very function over form. Not bad at all but I wouldn't mind v5 to bring a little bit of eye candy😉

Most beautiful though? Logic (looks slick mate even though I don't use it) and Reason is a feast for the eyes. The latter is not the most useful but boy does it look really inspiring.

Post

Since you asked, no, Reason doesn't look inspiring at all. It looks ridiculous. Too slavishly skeuomorphic to be of any value and way to many colours to look good.

Yes but the question was about form, not function, hence my surprise.
It's easy to confuse which knob you're grabbing for, and there are a lot of them on the screen at once.
I can't see that from any of the screenshots I've looked at. Quite the contrary, I like the way they lay things out.
If you know how to use Cubase, then you already know how to use Studio One.
Except Studio One is even easier. Everything is drag&drop.
I despise DnD. It's the Fisher-Price way of doing things. I prefer to know where everything is and how to access it, DnD just dumbs the process down. It was good when I first started with Cubase but now I do everything properly and it feels faster. e.g. instead of dragging an effect from the list on the right edge of the screen, all the way to the left edge of the screen and into a slot, it is much faster/easier to use the drop-down menu in the Insert section of the inspector strip/window.
As a former Cubase user, I can tell you:
Just think of the way you wish Cubase worked, and chances are good Studio One does it.
How long since you used it? I really like the way Cubase works, it makes perfect sense to me.
Also, Studio One can import exported Cubase projects directly (Cubase Track Archives.)
https://forums.presonus.com/viewtopic.php?t=4353 Come on in, the water's fine.
Studio One costs money and none of my collaborators use it. I'd have a go at Cakewalk because it's free but I'm not going to spend money just to move prisons.

Where are the Reaper boys who usually enter virtually all DAW threads?

There are more idiots like you, calling out «Reaper boys» than there are actual «Reaper boys» messing about Reaper.
There are two kinds of people in the world. And you're not one of them.

Post

I think they have been replaced by the Bitwig boys in the meantime. ;)

Huh? I really fail to see how there is a major difference in Cubase 9 or 10. Sure, maybe some details and icons, but the general optics are the same.
As a long time Cubase user I’m not overly happy with the whole design, even if you ignore the whole mess with widgets and windows from several different cubase versions starting from SX, it still lacks consistency, e.g. I counted like three or four different scroll bar designs. Also that it is not really possible to configure a good “light” UI theme. And a lot of the icons are really completely non-descriptive (although that is true for a lot of software today, it has been a trend of the past years to replace menus and text labels with completely unintuitive icons. I blame iPhone and more so Android for that).
Doesn’t make me want to change for a prettier DAW, though.

Logic Pro X. Can't use it ever being on Windows, but it is hands down the most beautiful DAW out there.

I'm a bit surprised that Cubase isn't doing that well though. I mean, honestly, I'm a Studio One user, but, how you can objectively consider its GUI better than Cubase's is a mystery to me. :)

I only can imagine that it is like BONES said - people choose their GUI, not the one they consider being the best GUI wise. Although it's surely up to interpretation what "best" means.
