I entered realtime recording as I record 75% of my music using that technique - pads, bass, leads, occasinally kick and snare, even some sequences and arpeggiated patterns. I tend to use a mouse when I enter in sequenced patterns into EnergyXT or Cubase, which I then trigger in real time. Drums parts are where I tend to use a mouse or step sequencing.

I'd be interested to hear what exactly you find not so handy about Logic's step recording.
You do know about the sustain pedal and the according key-commands ét all, do you?
ok, i'll pretend you've read the trhread and understood the topic ..

yes, I know about "the sustain pedal", but I suppose you mean what it is assigned to by default? that I don't know, but what I do now, is all the key commands in moving about the matrix editor. to be more precise, I have tried and/or remapped, and understand all the key commands under "keyboard input". but still I find these an extremely clumsy way of moving and editing compared to what is avaliable in trackers.

what else I find unnecessary unintuitive, is working with automation. these are the main things. there are plenty more.
you do have to admit, that logic isn't the most intuitive sequencer you could imagine there is, don't you?

Don't get me wrong. I love logic, and it's been The sequencer for me for years. it's mixer and the built in effects and synths are incredible, you need allmos t nothing else.. but something(s) about it has made me frequently search for a seqencer that suits me better. every couple of months I've tried out something else, for a couple of years now, and still returned logic in the end.

The whole point is that I just find logic a bit unconfortable, all in all, and am now asking around for substitutes that I should consider.

do you yourself have any good hints about step recording functions in logic? I'd like to hear them =)

This is newly updated, I'm pretty sure..It completely lost me, so maybe it's exactly what you're looking for :P

Go ahead & blow more money on that one, Amber..at least it's only $50 :P

Good luck figuring that shite out, btw..

f**k off! Everything I do is quantised to 1/16th, so what? Isn't that what muso's aim for anyway? The cool thing about step-recording is that you can concentrate on other things. I used to like using it with my M1/O1/W/Trinity so that I could get really good velocity data in. Worked like a charm every time. If I'd had to concentrate on getting the timing right the velocity would have definitely come out far more robotic-like so your assertion is flawed.

well, as I stated earlier, If you're used to trackers, there's virtually no learning curve at all, since they most of them work and look quite similar. =)

renoise is by the way afaik the best tracker by far. and by best I mean the one that offers an working environment of most possibillities. and by this I mean you can do almost anything relevant that you can do in logic f.ex.

have you figured out yet what I mean with "step reacording" ? =)

Yeah, I asked around..if I needed to do that I would have discovered it in the last 3 years, so more power to you , I guess...

trinity <3

I'm touching one right now =) It's been 7 years since I've been working seriously with it's seq, but I remember using it's step recording most of the time, too =)

but i'd recall that even trinitys step record isn't the easiest and most flexible possible one ..

what do you use for your step recording needs these days?

You're courting disaster asking BONES these kinds of questions :P

yeah, well, I'd say it's just a matter of what you're used to .. a matter of taste .. you wouldn't know you need a car either, if you haven't got used to one, or even seen anyone use one =)

I just personally find it essential .. and even seem to have a hard time understanding how anyone could live without it =)

I really think you should try programming rythms or arpeggios etc with a good step recording sequencer .. god only knows where you find one ;)

I use the mouse in the Piano Roll exclusively these days. Even if I work up a riff on a synth keyboard I still enter it by hand into the PR. It's just way easier and even randomising the velocity is simple so I really have no need of it any more.

what the hell do I need a bug-hunt for when I have eXT & Orion's built in Arpegiator?!

YOU'RE the one who needs to look at other stuff..seriously..then there's xoxos midi plugs..

there's no f**king way I'll need an arpegiator that exceeds the abilities of:

eXT
Orion PLat
ERA
xoxos stuff

or *golly* selecting synths that have built in arps..

c'mon man..quit trying to sell me a parking space when I own a plaza, m'kay?

haha, how come? :D

I'd really like to know ... since 1. this is the point of the whole thread (and the reason I stayed up till o3oo and still now, @ 11:30 havent yet gone to work ;)

and 2. if there wouldn't be this thread, I'd still find this about the most interresting question here @kvr ;))
