OK, after a month with the UX482 I am absolutely sold on it! Everything is so much slicker, even though it's just a step up from a 10th gen Core i7 to an 11th gen. I can reliably run my EVO8 with a 16 sample buffer at 96kHz and songs that were using more than 50% CPU are now in the 20%-30% range. That said, I do get crackles if I try to open or work in another application while the DAW is playing so I've still got EVO8 set to 128 samples, because that's easily fast enough to play drums live from a controller and I can play around with anything on the machine and not have any problems.

The touchscreen experience is far and away the best I've had on any laptop. It could be Windows 11 or it could just be a better touchscreen but it is really easy to use with my fat fingers. I wasn't looking forward to Win11 but I found a Stardock thing that extends the functionality enough to make it bearable. There is also a lot of other stuff to like in Win11 once you get past the f**k-up of a Start menu.

Overall, it has exceeded my expectations and I am really, really pleased with it. I noticed over the weekend that they are around 30% off at a local retailer, so maybe the next gen devices are just around the corner? I can't see myself being tempted, though, this thing is as close to perfect as I've experienced.

I've decided that Windows messes up their Start Menu every so often and then changes it back to remind us of how nice it actually was.

Is the UX842 good for drawing? Can you use a stylus/finger with a VST like Harmor? I've never had a touchscreen windows device but it's reaching a point where software is written better for it, it seems.

The UX482 comes with a stylus but I haven't tried it yet. The way I'm set up in the studio it would be a bit of a hassle, TBH. But I did fish the stylus out of the box the other day (which was in storage) so I'll get around to testing it in the next few days and let you know.

Yeah and the touchpad doubles as a numeric keypad, which is very cool. I think it's also a bit bigger, 15" instead of 14". It's bloody expensive, though.

One thing I forgot to mention is that this is the first machine I've used that has touchscreens that aren't super-reflective glass. They are beautiful matte screens that, as a bonus, don't show greasy fingermarks.

I don't use the touchscreen at all when I'm working. I only discovered how good it was over Easter, when I spent some time at a friend's place and the laptop was all I had with me. I've been using a mouse for almost 30 years, I'm much better with it than I am with my big, fat fingers. I've also got a number of excellent, expensive mice to ensure the best experience. They have things like the ability to change their speed/resolution on the fly and I can custom fit them to my hand.
