I believe it was common practice to throw a blanket over the sound (just a figure of speach) for opening acts and I have no doubt Nugent would do insist on such a thing.

They still do that. A couple of years ago I saw a show where the Pretenders were the opening act in a ballpark. It sounded like they were running through the kind of PA you take to gigs at the Holiday Inn. Next up was Journey, who came in at a reasonable volume. Then Def Leppard took the stage and you could probably have heard from anywhere downtown.
