Win 95, Win7, Win 8, Win 10...

Windows 7 isn't safe if you're reliant on running more current software.

Like? I have current versions of (for example) Kontakt, various synths (u-he etc), stuff from Spitfire, 8Dio, izotope, the list goes on, all running fine on a Win 7 system, which for me is far preferable to Win 10 or 11 (aka "Win 10.1"). No forced updates, for example.

I use win 11 because music is my hobby, and my machine gets used for real world purposes as well, and I want it to be as secure as possible. So I guess Win 7 users are just using there machine as a dedicated music tool and nothing else as it is very insecure in that regard?

So what do you win 7 people use for things that need security like banking? Is it all done on your smartphone now? Linux? A separate Windows or Mac laptop or something else?

Never had a security issue with Win 7. It is not "insecure."

I just bought a new machine, which obviously came with Win 11.
I'd installed Cubase, VEGAS, Painter and Visual Studio.
Before I started on all the plugins, I'd had enough of Win11's "stripped down" interface.
What gives with that taskbar and Start menu? And Taskbar Corner? Sounds like a coffee shop. Or a sitcom.
So I wiped the C drive and installed Win 10.
'Nuff said.

Is there a poll or any information what os daw users have today?
I still use WIN 7 64 bit and it works great for me, most new plugins still work in WIN7
even though minimum system requirements might be Win 10.
I know 14 people who have got a daw and 8 still use Win7.
Devs like Waves might loose a lot of profit, because their new plugins do not run in Win 7 any more!?
I suppose the target of devs are "bedroom" producers first and foremost and not professionals. If a professional is someone who makes his living with mastering, mixing or producing music, there are not too many, I guess, compared to a bigger amount of bedroom producers

i will not use win11 by any means. the ms rule still works since 3.11. there are no two good win versions back to back.

it even survived a 3400g apu runnin on shared memory on a state of the art motherboard, if one dont mind the crashing games tho^^. and if you know what youre doin, it even shuts the eff up for good

To configure stuff is a nightmare, Microsoft trying to reinvent the wheel...

Well, remove some bloatware and do some tweaks and it can be more tolerable
and also behave and looks a bit more like Win 10.

Also, audio performance may be better with Win 11, but I've just gone from an 8 year-old i7 4790 to an i9 12900 and the difference is staggering. The comparatively marginal improvements under Win 11 aren't worth fighting the interface.

Waves no longer supports Win7, so you can't use Waves Central to download an install any of the newer plug-ins -- and by "newer", I mean any after v10 (they're on v14 now).

You technically can still download and re-install any v9 or v10 plug-ins you had running under Win7, but IIRC, they made the "switch" sometime during v11 (or maybe right before it), so you can't install any newer plug-ins. And the way Waves Central is configured, you're more likely to screw up your v9 and v10 plug-ins by replacing them with newer versions if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing.

I have several Waves plug-ins waiting for me to upgrade to Win10, including many v9 and v10 versions that I "updated" to v12 through v14 for free, through Waves. But since I rarely use them, I'm in no hurry.
