High pass on mastering does not equal to more headroom

I don't think this is a black or white issue.
High-passing can be an important part of mixing, but at the same time I can see that using the HP filter in something like Limitless last in your chain could be doing more harm than good. It seems to cause the equivalent of high frequency aliasing in the low-end.

Yes there is less energy there overall, but it creates the stereotypical aliasing mirroring effect where frequencies appear to bounce off 0hz back into the sub/intrasonic range and I doubt that's doing anything good to your low end. The difference with HF aliasing is its often above the audible range and the energy needed to reproduce the frequencies is far less than in the 0-30hz range.

Most commercial mixes have energy between 0-30hz but it is uniform. When traditional HP filters are applied at the mixbus/mastering stage there will be less overall energy in that region, but what remains can look like a mess.

I think a better way to achieve the expected results from HP filtering while reducing the artifacts is to use spectral editing rather than traditional EQ, Either spectral edit the individual tracks, or stems before sending to the master bus. However even if you feed stems perfectly clean below 0-30hz through most limiters the end result will reintroduce frequencies in that area.

A post-mastering step could be to spectral edit that range (i.e. open in RX, delete 0 to 25-35hz depending on the material) It obviously won't retroactively improve the performance of master FX, but could still increase headroom and reduce the same type of issues with consumer/professional playback systems which have their own built in HP filtering.
