I doubt many people would consider Noel Gallagher to be a great guitar player. His picking technique is certainly unorthodox (to put it charitably). At the same time, I realize now as an older man that the jangly sound produced by that technique is enjoyed by a lot more people than the fuller sound produced by my "better" technique:tundra5 wrote: Thu Aug 03, 2023 4:04 pm and even then people will say “you great “
and you may think “ i can only play 8 chords “
it doesn’t matter in the masses eyes you have achieved success which equals greatness
wanting new gear is procrastination also …

Yes, true. As DrGonzo said earlier, it can take time to find the instrument you gel with, but once you find it, it's probably best to hang on to it and make the best of it. No point in chasing the next thing that is only a 10% improvement. where as some people get something don’t even learn it then want something else in the hope it will inspire them or make them
better and it won’t that’s procrastination

That’s awesome for inspirational movie dialogue, but here in the real world, I’ve seen many great things “built” and no one came. Great things. I have friends who were in a prog rock group. They were as good as anyone. King Crimson good. Everyone who did hear or see them, who liked that kind of music, agreed, so I’m not just talking about my opinion.
So… where are they? They gave up after a few years of knocking on doors that were locked. Why? Who knows. The only one I’m still in contact with is the lead guitarist, who set out to make more commercially viable music. I’ve heard his tracks. They’re as good as anything I’ve heard on the radio. So why isn’t he a household name? Why does mediocre song writer Taylor Swift pack stadiums where tickets sell for thousands, and my friend is mostly teaching lessons to pay the rent?
Go ahead and build it, though, but make sure that you enjoy the process of building it, because the odds are that no one is coming. You can’t point at exceptions to the rule and call them the rule. Pop stars are the bait the music industry uses to trick people into believing that it’s possible. Like a lottery.

it's easy, you just parade yourself on tv to simon cowell, and if you're the best, you become a pop star.

Not 'music industry.' Gear Industry. 'Get this new gizmo and you'll be great.
Procrastination has more to do with perfectionism, which can play into the ,must have this gear to be my best!'
Bollocks.

OneRepublic wasn't just luck, either. They worked hard at it for years and had many minor successes along the way. Their trajectory would be a great one to emulate.

this is disgusting really
because if you give this attitude to your kids they will never try
and anyway why is it always top ten success that people think is success live music is where money is made now
and bands tour have a few good thousand followers and make success
the attitude online is soo negative
but when i meet some musicians
in real life and people who have had some kind of good life from it
there attitude is
“ one song “
“ you can do it “
if you keep trying never give up
listen i know life isn’t a movie because it’s hard
and has a lot more downs than ups
but these people who achieve have one thing many of us including me don’t have
they do not give up
and they risk everything to get there
and keep going
and maybe some don’t hit the top too but they still have a good life from it
no one is coming
f**k me get a noose
bottle of whiskey and some tablets now
i was having a convocation with a woman in the bar who was awesome you can still make it i said
nah im 35 now she said i just do what i do now
and while what she does was and is good
she accepted her fate at 35 so young
i knew a brazilian man who would never accept his fate he is finally teaching now after some small tv success in portugal ( teaching in japan )
a lot of people who achieve in any field are built different they don’t hear no or accept defeat
but like my cat lol

that’s exactly my point it’s not luck
it’s hard work persistence
to never give up these are the one who don’t give up
takes a strong kind of self belief a lot of us ( not saying us ) but humans don’t have

i never see this guy play barre chords at all when he plays acoustic
and live people tell me his solos are simple as ( i only strum chords so i don’t know )
but it doesn’t matter he has something and he has his brothers loud mouth together they built something very quickly and people came

Yes, don't be dissuaded. Be realistic about what the music industry is but also be creative about where you can fit in it. "Making it" can mean a lot of different things and certainly doesn't have to mean becoming a pop star. Just ask the ones who are now drug addled or dead.

In case I communicated myself poorly, it wasn't meant as a slight against Noel Gallagher or Oasis. They make great music and deserve everything they have.tundra5 wrote: Thu Aug 03, 2023 9:02 pm i’ve heard this so much and i’ve no doubt you are mate
