A good exercise for me is to vary my approach to making music. Being a creature of habit it's easy to rely on tried and tested methods to build tracks. My usual approach (given the sort of music I make) is to build the beats, then a bassline and then everything else. My last track was a result of doing this in reverse order. It's also fun to work with synths you haven't used in a while, that can be quite inspirational.

I sometimes set myself the task of recreating a certain sound or synth line.. in the process I usually stumble upon something completely different that gives me inspiration for a track

yeah that's a bit like my 'Idea Transforming Stairs' (patent pending) - usually when DJ'ing or listening to tracks downstairs I hear something I like and proceed upstairs to attempt it, only to discover that the idea has mutated (and also due to a lack of ability) and it sounds totally different. On the rare occasions that I do manage to recreat it, it feels like cheating so I don't end up using it anywayspaceman wrote:I sometimes set myself the task of recreating a certain sound or synth line.. in the process I usually stumble upon something completely different that gives me inspiration for a track

that sounds like some faulty functionality no one asked for that steinberg would include in the next version of cubaseCypherOne wrote:

That's a long way to go to dribble.peppy197 wrote:But I usually travel 1000 km to Steve's Music Store in Montreal and drool on their synths and things.
I hope you take a cloth to clean up after yourself...
I had a break for about 5 years after getting married when I barely wrote a thing. Over this last year I have completed just over 30 pieces, some of which are finishing ideas I had around 8-10 years ago, and never got to complete..
I've never really been worried, tho' the monthly contest has been a great impetus for getting stuff done!

I'm in one now..worse than ever...not just musically...I don't want to write...i don't want to draw...I don't want to play video games...I don't wanna code...all I ever do is think about her...and when I try to do anything else she distracts me. But she isn't even here...dammit.

cat, kitty, pussy...isn't it all the same? a metaphor for the horrible virus that infects the hearts of men?
or were you refering to the irritating way that Felis domesticus tends to interfere with work with razor sharp claws?

I had a dry spell of a good 8 or 9 years. I was working in the corporate world and miserable. But I got laid off!
After which, I quit drinking, wrote 2 hours of music for various projects, and had my first child. Dry spell over.
Work your way out of it (meaning, work on MUSIC and don't feel too precious about it, or yourself).
