the best advice I've ever received (the only advice as to composition I've ever entertained tbf, and the only real class, I was "applied music" but I'd changed focus to "electronic composition") I ever got was, I had made some noise in electronic music lab (SFCM, an outbranch from the legendary Tape Music Center) and the professor - Alden Jenks - hears it and says: "Lot of energy here. Subtract from it." I'm inspired just thinking about the genius of that, in seven words.

With the proviso that I know nothing much about poetry (even less French poetry... ) I did think that this by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said it well;

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

Hehe, too much Johnny Marr, MBV, shoegaze etc at a formative age here; my problem has always been not too much of the widdle, but too much of the multi-tracked wobble.
