When working on voice overs for our videos (where I tend to focus on background noise more than anything else) I use my trusty old Bose QuitComformat 15 headphones. Maybe not the first choice for mixing, but perfect for listening to unwanted background noises.

I play mixes through cheap Poundland PC speaker using VLC and tweak VLC's GEQ to remove mud and boxiness.
Commercial mixes sound clear and present through these tiny speakers.
It gives me an idea of the balance, mud and clarity is my issues. The EQ below seems to give me an idea.
