I guess they can't be purists.
Speaking of Deluxe's and Thinlines...I hate em sorry. I've got a buddy who has been sporting the same thinline since '77 with only a refret here and there. He's a great player but that guitar aint helping one bit.
Original Tele's had ceramic magnets so not that far off from P90's There have been plenty of variants through the years. I loved lace golds on my 90's strat and hated lace on my pine tele. But I also hate the tone on my pine tele regardless of pups. It's the freaking body wood.

My Tele Deluxe is one of my failed projects. It's a no-name Japanese body that I stuck a Chandler neck on to, and it was awesome. Then I changed the Chandler to a Fender Reissue Tele Deluxe neck and it completely ruined it. Then, instead of changing it back to awesome, I decided I would take it completely apart and install Wide Range pickups, and when that failed even more spectacularly, the parts were scattered around by warehouse and storage units, never to find their way together again.
Moral of the story, obviously, is you don't change awesome.

Thanks. I'm seriously thinking of swapping the neck on my MIM Vintage modified. Granted it will play easier just cleaning up the fret edges.
I've had a mixed bag of results upgrading hardware on various guitars. I think the first one which was a Magnum LP copy swapping out the pups with SD's back in the 80's. That thing changed from day to night but the neck broke and I wanted a more expensive guitar so I left it behind.
I'm divided at this point. The altruist want's to make the most I have and not chase rainbows. Yet dreams of the pot of gold torment me. Different rig, other guitars.

Country is not my thing, but Brad Paisleys modern, diverse approach is fine with me.
If jazzier side is ok, Mike Stern.
Bluesier, Robben Ford.

Great stuff, @subterfuge! Robben Ford is one of those players I haven't heard a whole lot of, but he blows me away every time! And most of what I'd heard in the past was him playing humbucker guitars like his Fender Esprit, he really rips on a Tele.
