1-In the 80's they used digital synths(DX7 and stuff)
that is NOT vintage!
2-In the 80's they got the bass pretty much right, balanced with the mix.Today, there is too much bass in most of the productions in my opinion.

This is a funny topic. I've been playing guitar since '83 and back then I hated the 80's sound and the new wave movement. I was heavily into guitar rock and synthesizers were the enemy. I used to make fun of guys that would listen to bands like Erasure and all that drum machine stuff...
Now, for some inexplicable reason, I LOVE all that cheezy stuff: vocoders, 808s, bouncing basslines, etc. ELECTROPOP RULES!!!

It is sometimes easy to look back and say "what crap". We tend to forget that technology has improved now, but it really started somewhere.
To use another example. If you watch godzilla movies from the 50's you'll be horrified about the bad special fx. If you watch 90's/2000 godzilla movies in the year 2030 you'll be just as horrified.
Digital music started in the 80's. If is was not for those people we would not have moved to where we are now. In the context of time, they were breaking new grounds. Sure, those grounds are now broken and we have developed better technology and sounds. It does not mean that those artists were bad. It just means that we are better now.

yeah, but...I thought the 80's sounded bad AT THE TIME! I thought the move to digital parameter access and FM, and all that...sucked AT THE TIME!Sepheritoh wrote:It is sometimes easy to look back and say "what crap". I'm with you.bastien wrote:Hold on a second...
Have you listened to 'Two Tribes' or 'Relax' lately? They still sound f**king awesome!
As does anything touched by the mighty hand of Vince Clarke.
And Soft Cell! Duran Duran! Anything from the Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards camp. And Prince!
Even some old Stock, Aitken & Waterman productions still sounds great - Brilliant or Dead or Alive for example.
I really enjoyed the 80s.
I still listen to A-HA, Duran Duran, Yazoo, Culture Club, The The, The Cure, Prince, Pointer Sisters, Pet Shop Boys...
I loved the 80s because of the music.
The fashion on the other hand......

I think it might be because it was totally new at the time. Our ears were not trained for that new (and crappy) sound.clueless wrote: yeah, but...I thought the 80's sounded bad AT THE TIME! I thought the move to digital parameter access and FM, and all that...sucked AT THE TIME!

erm...
or seriously. I listened to my Yes records or DO YOU REMEMBER - the wizard and Move - that sound sucks!!!
The emulated strings sounded like crap. I think it was the melotron. Wow, ground breaking and.... shit.... if compared to GPO and EWQL.

Yeah! The sound of the Mellotron really sucks! I can remember how pleased keyboard players were when the DX7 arrived "At last! A decent string sound!" they cried!Sepheritoh wrote:erm...
