If it brings you enjoyment and allows you to express yourself as an artist (something that is a reward unto itself) then don't worry. It's better than spending the money on fast women and slow horses.

A lot of Golfers spend thousands of dollars on clubs, gadgets, green fees, etc just to shoot 20 over par. Not likely they'll ever be professional.

thanks for reminding meSascha Franck wrote:I mean, I wouldn't because I find cars (especially expensive ones) to be one of mankinds biggest plagues ever - but that's beyond the point, the analogy IMO fits rather well.
I'll spend just as much for car registration and insurance as for music gear this year.
(well, maybe half of it but still a f**king lot)

You are exaggerating. I am married man, ( well, I dont most probably have kids), and buy music stuff all the time. Software is easiest. You just order it from internet and download. And women usually dont have a clue about prices of powered monitors, sound cards, etc.braj wrote:If you're not married, devote your life now to buying as much stuff you want in life now, because when you get a wife and kids, it's all overSeriously, if you want it, get it. hey guys, interesting to rea so many opinions!
well, I'll try to answer some of your questions:
1st, I CAN afford it. I could even buy 2 or 3 viruses right now actually. It's not that i'm a millionaire
but I can.
2nd, my woman doesn't live from me and anyway she's just...great and very happy that i make my dreams come true, so no problem with that.
the problem has to do just with 2 issues:
1. conscience. morality. should I?
2. necessity. do I need it?
of course talent is the key, and I can't say if I have, maybe you can by listening to my music. But would my music improve if I had a Virus (or a Nord Lead, etc) compared to what I do with my free synths?
is it more inspiring to have a hardware synth in front of you than a picture of a synth in the computer screen? some people say yes, others say no. I have never had a hardware synth under my fingertips. never. software equipment made my dream of making music come true since I didn't have the money 2 years ago to buy not even a cheap synth. but now...
well those things. It's not that I can't think by myself, haha, I usually do what I want. It's just I wanted to hear your opinions, opinions usually interest me.
thanks.

If you saw the way I record you'd have a heart attack. And I just finished mastering our new album on my el-cheapo Edirol MA-10's using God-only-knows what A/D-D/A convertors. Everyone f**king loves the sound, BTW. The label were happy to pay some arsehole 700euros to do it until they heard what we had.electro wrote:The 1st thing for amateurs to put money into, is an excellent monitoring system. 2nd thing is excellent D/A converters to go along wit a 64bit Athlon DAW with basic MIDI controllers. www.mytekdigital.com A good monitoring system will help you to sound like less of an amateur.

i honestly can't see the why you're trying to justify this to yourself. Why is it it that when it's music it's "ooh, should i spend this much?" but when it's cars/bikes etc. it's fine.
i was toying with spending around £500 recently on a vintage Roland Space Echo, but i was trying to justify the cost to myself (and i don't even have a woman!). i phoned a mate of mine about it and he'd just spent nearly £1000 on a top-of-the-line paintball gun. A f**king paintball gun FFS! His 'justification' was - "Do you really want/need it? Will it make you happier? If yes, get it!"
After finding out that i had no problem buying the Space Echo (for £375 so it wasn't so bad), but for Christ's sake, at least we're doing something creative and doesn't harm anyone or the environment. Oh, and everytime my mate plays paintball, the paint pellets cost about £40 per game.
So serious hobbies cost - just do it, you know you'll be happier

no, no, I'm not trying to justify against others! As I say, I just wanted to make you participate what's inside my head regarding this issue. I know it's not immoral, I was exaggerating of course.

1...morality? I suppose you could buy a starving Ethiopian a Virus instead, but I doubt he'll have access to electricity to play it with, so he can't busk to earn his dinner. And he certainly can't eat a synth...(not unless he was really really hungry and had very strong teeth...which he won't have because he's vitamin and calcium deficient)1. conscience. morality. should I?
2. necessity. do I need it?
2...Of course you do. It's one of those psychological equations...if you want it, you need it...wanting toys is a necessity of life and a basic human right to musicians. Just like mathematicians can get anything to equal zero if they piss around with numbers enough.
So....you buy a shitload of synths, make top music, become famous and make loads of money...then donate loads of said money to benevolent charities to aid mankind...shit, if you become famous enough you can organise a big world-aid gig. See...if you buy enough gear you're doing humanity a great service.

great
I've decided that i'm not going to buy a Virus
I'm going to buy 2 Viruses, one for each of my hands (and I'm considering another 2 for my feet: I happen to play almost as good with my feet than with my hands. you judge if I play right or wrong
