Maybe it's just my taste in music, but I've tried it on 6 songs and it didn't work at all. The vocals stayed just as loud as before, but the song sounded like it was being played by an old AM radio inside of a septic tank.

A few years ago I had a cruddy little portable CD player and I dropped it. Apparently something inside of it broke and pieces of songs were missing after. I don't mean parts were quiet, I mean they were just plain gone.

I know vocal removal is usually done through phasing the stereo tracks together, and that may be what happened on my CD player. But still, it didn't sound phase-shifted and the stereo ballance was just as it had been before.

It was really freaky listening to Nine Inch Nails that way becasue once you peel the top few layers off you realize that there is tons of weird stuff under there. A lot of the loop-points were terribly done, but hidden under all the other stuff you'd never know. I guess it just goes to show that sometimes you don't need to fix the loop as much as you just need to cover the ends with other noises.

I loved that CD player, and I fully intended to go through my CD collection and make a ton of samples, but the damage done to the CD player eventually claimed the entire unit. After a little it stopped working entirely.

Still, imagine how much you could sell something like that for!
Excuse all the blood.

Your material should be stereo with vocals panned to, or around, center.

When this is the case, Extra Boy should work well.

It probably doesn't work so well on mp3 recordings because the stereo phase information is not coherent.

Check that you are using the correct preset for what you would like to do.

tried.
verdict ....it doesnt do miracles.
don't expect to get an acapella out of a song....
yet useful to get rid of the bass and kickdum in 1 click.
but the remix u'll make will laways have some of the originals music.
usfull if u're lazy enogh to open an eq. u'll get similar results with an eq.

just bump !

Starcraft, I challenge you to get the same results with an eq. ;)

Also, nobody said it would do miracles. It does what it does. It's impossible to create an acapella from a fully mixed track with current technology. It will require processing and programming of currently unimaginable power in order to do it. ;)

The link is working fine. Check your firewall and be sure you have Java enabled in your browser. It's a popular download.

P.S. Since the plug-in is FREE, I do not provide support.

Hi,

I have received a number of requests relating to Extra Boy. For those interested, I am working on a "Pro" version of Extra Boy. I can't give a release date yet since I have some other projects on the go.

In the mean time, the FREE version of Extra Boy is still the best value for money when it comes to quality vocal isolation or removal.

Listen to the Audio Demo (mp3)

(using only the presets)

Note: The source material for this demo is an mp3. Ideally a higher quality source material is preferred since the processing involved in mp3 encoding can destroy the phase information which Extra Boy requires for optimum performance.

I'm not so much for removing vocals on other peoples mixes. But this plug has a great use as a special effect also. The spreadilate sounds really cool.

Like a lot. :)

Oh boy, I would really love an Extra boy pro.

Maybe more resolution? Some morph before the remove? A "center witdh" parameter? A "wide" parameter before remove?

I think it really needs one thing:

A center witdh parameter witch gives you the ability to play those drums OK. Thats because when you want to take the side sounds out, you end up loosing the quality of the drums behind the singer (their not just in the center).

Another thing is that it would need a progressive isolation of the center, so centered info would play nice (when it's also on the sides).

Generally, it only needs to sound better, with the same removal.

I tested it in my DAW last night. Worked okay, but I think it increased the cpu load a bit??? :?

Must learn more on how to use the spreadilate feature, because yesterday I had mixed feelings about how it work and if it sounded good on individual instruments.

I am very keen on this Pro version (maybe it will come in time so I can make myself a nice Christmas present).

Anything that would improve the attack-phase smearing ("swooshing") would be highly appreciated, even if materially increases latency.

Andreas
