last road trip of any kind i made was Connecticut to Maine and my friend had the box set of Flying Burrito Brothers with a little Graham Parsons 'Avenging Angel', Emmy Lou Harris 'Mirror Ball' 'Red Dirt Girl' and some more CD's from Steve Earle and his sister, oh and some Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Lyle Lovett. (we drove around for a week once we got to Maine) I do recall John Hiatt on the way home 'something something Memphis'
not sure why he's so into that music being a real northeast kind of guy, but it really worked on that trip.
but i should also mention Blue Oyster Cult's live cover of 'Born to be Wild' as a kickoff

emdot, dewd, look at the original post for conventional. :-D
Okay, my choices for a unconventional truck driving soundtrack:
Looking for... the Best -- David Hasselhoff
Banned Barbershop Quartet -- Richard Sherman and Milt Larsen
Muhammad Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay -- Muhammad Ali, Frank Sinatra, Richie Havens, Howard Cosell, et al.
Girl -- Tiny Tim with Brave Combo
The Wild Bull -- Morton Subotnick
Symphonia armoniae celestium revelationum -- Hildegard von Bingen
Disco Bill -- Bill Cosby
Circus Clown Calliope, Vols. I & II -- Unattributed. Some clown on a calliope maybe?

If that's not unconventional enough, then I give up. :-)

Or you could listen to some Stockhausen, and stop every 2 miles to see weather or not that sound really was your muffler falling off...

How the hell did I forget that one?
For real fun, try the Black Rose version with King Diamond singing it...
That goes well with Mercyful Fate's Truck Driver song...
