I sorta liked 'Play' anyway (especially Porcelain - say what you like, that chord sequence is very clever), although it is kind of insipid... Maybe I should check out his other stuff..
Does anyone else find Moby's music to be highly over-rated

I dunno, after watching the Eurovision song contest last night Moby doesn't seem that bad.

cant be bothered reading the thread, but:
Early stuff (the housey hardcore things) like "go" and the "everything is wrong" album are cool, as are his political stances (even his christianity!).
He also did one of the best gigs I have ever seen (for free as well!) doing his house/trance stuff in the style of US hardcore punk - well good.
However, he is now a big fat sell-out who is trading off other people and produces bland wallpaper for people who buy 5 albums and year and have dinner parties

I must be one of his few fans. I love his electronica, ambient music.
Around this crowd, I feel almost ashamed but, yes, I love his music and, no, I do not think he is overated, and, yes, I am currently drunk at this time (woohoo!!!)
Cheers,
Rabban

So this is what you think defines a musician? Advanced chord theory? Being able to play an instrument(not a softsynth etc.) and produce pro sounding mixes with a ridiculous deadline? Doesn't make much sense to me.tranel wrote: My apologies to those of you who actually make a living from music, know advanced chord theory, have developed real, intuitive skills in playing (not programming) your instruments, and can produce professional-sounding mixes to the sometimes ridiculous deadlines set by the industry. I take my hat off to you, you I'd be prepared/honored to call musicians.

..i think he is a talented soundmangler/songwriter ...what i like about some of his songs (the old ones) is their simplicity and the way he put ideas&sound together ..but i never understood why he shifted towards punk and rockmusic and eventually began to sing ..i mean there are enough bad rock band out there, we don´t need more....i think that´s a common phenomenon when people are getting popular and see their face on TV too often they think they can do everything...he should chuck away his guitars and go back to electronic music...

I like some of his ambient work but almost everything else I hear from him, and the interviews I've seen/read with him, make me believe he's basically a boring wanker who really doesn't know when his music's working and when it's not. The most interesting thing about him is that he manages to still have a high profile career. I can only assume that he is in fact a genius . . . at self promotion, if not song writing.

i didn't read the whole discussion here - in my opinion Moby is a very good musician.
I like almost all of his music. I'd would agree that he isn't the most innovative one but he's doing very good listenable music - all who ever tried producing a pop song, should know how it is without getting cheesy.
Has anybody seen him at the Mayday`95 in germany? This was so exciting! He had so much energy - unbelieveable!!

This place is great for us old, out of touch musicians.
Before reading this thread, I didn't know a damn thing about Moby. I still wouldn't recognize one of his songs when I heard it.
But at least I know who he is now.
