Imagine what? How much slower it would probably run on your Mac?zai wrote:agree, a compliment to Reason than a competitor....
Too bad that P5V2 only runs on a PC...I have a MAC, I could only iamgine!
Is Project5 v2 Better Than Live 4 or Reason 3 (IYHO)?

Yah. I'm pleased to see what's coming in Live, but I'll keep right on using Sonar when its approach fits the job better. Each is great for something.original flipper wrote:its all good, Ableton do this, Cake do that, Props do this ... shit, we all win!
I too see Live and Reason as near-ideal symbionts. :-) There's more overlap between the two than before but they still make a lovely (lively? reasonable?) couple.

crumbs! for some reason it never occured to me that you (meffy) might actually make music!
i was almost convinced that you were the mind of some brilliantly gifted wordsmith translated into a digital entity, whose programming had glitched somewhat such that you considered yourself a skunk!
and now you turn out to be a skunk who actually does make music!
i'm not sure if i had any kind of point, "t'were merely astonishment, m'lud"

Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Actually, you're close.zai wrote:What I am thinking is...Ableton knew that a lot of us are using Live 3/4...and 4 was introduced not long ago it seems! Now version 5? Come on...did what Propellerheads did with Reason...release a free downloadable version of 4.5.
One of the problem I have with Ableton is...P5V1 to P5V2 is a major overhaul...Live 3 and Live 4 are basically the same (with a few minor changes)...now Live 5...within 2 years...Hm...they just want us to throw in those upgrade fees every year. OK, a little upset can you tell from reading that Live 5 is under way. Anyway, I better go check out what Live 5 has to offer before going on here...might get burn here by saying the above statement! :p
Zai
P.S. I wonder Centrino 1.5 w/516 Ram enough to run P5V2?
THE biggest differences between Live 3 & 4 are the things that Live 4 have that are missing in Live 3:
MIDI Recording
Open Format for VST Instruments
Ableton's own soft instruments
etc.
BTW, Live 2 & 3 have only a few differents between them. But if you're already happy with using another host for you midi programming needs, then Live 3 would be good enough for audio/loop sequencing only (and it's a lot more fun than Acid Pro, IMHO).

Ableton Live and Reason together is an AWESOME combo!! And now with Reason 3.0, with the use of the combinator, you can have Ableton Live audio and midi channels mapped to every combinator through the Reason Hardware interface and only use the clumsy Reason sequencer when you really need to
! In fact i hardly have to go to ProTools for anything now save for mastering!

Ok call me a heretic but ......
As a long time Live user I'm more tempted by P5 V2.0 than Live 5 myself.
I think the integrated synths are a real winner and both seem to have opposing strengths and weaknesses.
Saying that, I do feel LIVE is taking a more "live" and somewhat "DJ centric" approach to production.
Personally I se no need for MP3 file compatibility in professional DAW.
I feel P5 straddles the fence better with regards to that "in between" application.
It definately has superior midi editing and handling and handles multi-timesignature based compositions far more effectively.
Besides which Dimension / Psyn II etc are seriously good as bundled plug ins for example and well worth the admission price alone.
Don't know if I wan't to keep forking out for an annual upgrade every year for Live etc at this rate.
Sooner or later you just have to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough.
I wouldn't be upgrading hardware (if I still owned any) at this sort of rate in the real world either.
So verdicts out for me.
I wouldn't call Live 5 the proverbial P5 killer as P5 will rewire Host/Slave with 3rd party VSTi's intact etc etc....
Hmmmmm I'm giving P5 a test drive tomorrow anyway so we'll see what I conclude.

I think it's good to have the option to use mp3:s directly if you sometimes need to do that .. so that you don't have to convert loads of files before you can use them ..
or are you saying that it's the only option?
or are you saying that it's the only option?

HI
The Midi editing aspect is what has always been the attraction for me - if this aint right I can't work with a host - what amazes me is how arcane or to be less polite downright backward some programs still are in this department - I found the way that Reason graphically represents the piano-roll is almost beyond belief, I mean yes it is usable but the colour, the way the placement of midi events is graphically represented is beyond words for me.
Now I actually think that Lives implementation of Midi is MUCH worse ... I won't bother to go into detail but it is a mess ... and no mention of it for V5 - I hope it is radically changed for the sake of the users, don't the developers listen to the user base?
I will not keep harping on about P5, I mean I only purchased it a few weeks back - SXV3 is my main host along with T2 for certain things and P5 was really something I thought I might use as a self contained workspace to focus from all those vst's I have, truth is P5 has room for improvement like the rest - in my case it can't deal with WAV loops very well without jumping hoops!
Flipper.

i almost hate to get involved in this sort of thread
P5's orientation started with some really user friendly midi editing features. With every version they've built on that to add alternate workflow methods that now include the ability to play in/record midi, audio and Groove Matrix performance. This really enhances a live/performance feel to what P5 is doing. I really like the way I can play in a track while the other tracks are playing. So (for me) with P5 composition/recording is the focus; live performance is the icing.
Live's orientation from the start was live performance. Performance is the focus; composition/recording is the icing. So it makes some sense that the midi implementation lags.
If you don't do a lot of midi editing, it could be that Live is 'better' fit for composition/recording as well as performance. I do a lot of deconstruction/reconstruction of midi patterns and no live performance, so P5 is a better fit for me.
It's a big world and there's no need for one host to 'kill' another

i think trying to kill a thread makes even less sense.
I know i might be making a stretch but this forum might just be a good place to discuss why one prefers one host/music application over another and vice versa
