A) Does FS indeed play up to 96 notes?
B) Under Windows SX is performing quite a bit worse (usually around 20-30%).
C) On individual tests, the differences aren't even halfway as apparent as on "reallife" tests, using a mix of audio tracks, instrument and FX plugins.

And I forgot to add: Are you really getting 768 voices out of filterscape?
My current machine (an Athlon 2800) usually doesn't perform all that bad, still I can't even playback 100 voices (it stops at around 80), using the initial setting.
I know that dual G5s are great powerhorses but couldn't imagine a performance that much better - I mean, it's more than 10x better.

Uhm... errr... oh... that's 8 x 8 voices... initialize is set to "medium" voices which is an average of 8 voices when you hold chords...jdg wrote:768 voices for 5bars (8 intances with 96 notes each instance)
(I was almost shitting myself... my 1.8 G5 single maxes out at 40 or so voices, never checked...)
Btw. Emagic says that their cpu meter works "conservatively", so it mostly looks busier than it really is... you should check AU performance in AU Lab (in Tiger Dev Tools), this looks more reasonable.
And on topic: I can not imagine that there would be a noticable difference between VST and AU.

Oh, 8 voices then... that's making my machine puke at around 30 then.
[Edit]: Urs, are you sure about 8 voices at "medium"? I can clearly play more voices with nothing getting stolen.

Hmmmm... this is getting more confusing.
As said, for me FS/VA is playing back more than 8 voices, using the "initialize" setting. On the other hand, I can't imagine any machine playing back 8x96 voices (otherwise we'll never need new computers again), so I think we need to know the voice limit before proceeding with any tests.

Ok.. with FM7, both hosts CPU meters are about 60% with 256 voices.
i used 4xFM7 with 64 poly each.
so.. FM7 mac VST and AU in Cubase and Logic are pretty much the same CPU wise.

Amazing performance figures, I must say. Can't even get halfway close to that with my current machine.

No, I'm not sure. I'm using a lot of weird tricks for the voice management, so it kinda depends... but I'm pretty sure that held notes should be 8 voices...Sascha Franck wrote:Urs, are you sure about 8 voices at "medium"? I can clearly play more voices with nothing getting stolen.

and to answer spaceman's question,
if you ONLY have logic, then might as well just install the AU version of a plug-in, if one exists... otherwise you have to use the VST to AU wrapper... and install the plug-in's ONLY vst version...as that's the only version available...
do you see what I mean?
of course, if you use both Cubase and Logic, you need the VST version for Cubase, as it definitely DOESN'T support AU, and if you can, install the AU version to run in Logic...
for best results:
Logic = AU plug-ins (if available)
Cubase = VST plug-ins (if available)
and heck, while we're at it
ProTools = RTAS plug-ins
and drat, what's the format from MOTU?
Oh yeah,
Digital Performer = MAS
isn't it nice that each company makes their own standards?
how nice for us users, how simple and delightful
