Oh no - here we go again

Top right hand corner of vst - have you assigned the green squares to 'venom synth in/out'

If you then get a message about 'midi port already in use' you need to disable Ableton from using it(Venom Synth) in your DAW midi settings.

Do not assign 'venom midi in/out', this is for external to Venom Hardware only.
Wormhelmet wrote:I'm using Ableton. All my trials with it are right in the thread. Works fine now. Just have to go in Ableton preferences under midi settings and uncheck venom synth in and venom synth out as on. Leave them off, then under midi channel choose all inputs and channel 1 and it just works. Not in front of my DAW now, but I believe I might have had to pick an input on the output section. It's either leave as no input or pick channel 1. I'll check when I get home, but that will be in about 8 hours.
Ok I followed these instructions but I'm still getting the 'device in use' when i try to select venom synth out on the right green button? In ableton I've got venom synth in turned off and venom synth out turned on, and channel 1 selected on the midi track. The left green button is selected as venom synth in.
Don't turn on venom synth in or out in preferences. They have to be off for both. Then use the green buttons in VenomEd to select ins and outs. Enable the track with all inputs. Under output, select either none or channel 1, I forget which. Still not home yet to give a screenshot.

You still might get a pop up warning about in use, but in the green buttons in VenomEd, you'll get the ability to select venom synth in and venom synth out.

Re-reading my post, I can see how you read to set it up the way you did, but I was meaning to uncheck on for both venom ynth in and venom synth out. Sorry for confusion.

After playing around with all of the Presets, I moved on to auditioning the Vintage Synth Pad Sonic Boost collection that I purchased, plus some things like the Rick Bonnin set that I got on venomsynth.com. Here's my question:

With the editor in Virtual Bank mode, I opened the Bonnin set, and found his 60 presets in C and Bank D now empty. I then did a File-Open for the Sonic Boost Bank 2, which is set to go to Bank D. The editor asked if I wanted to save changes to the Bonnin set, I said no, and the Sonic Boost Bank opened in D. But it also loaded the Sonic Boost Bank 1 material into Bank C. If I then try to open the Rick Bonnin set, it loads into C and D is now empty again.

Isn't it possible, for example, to load the Bonnin set into C and the Sonic Boost Bank 2 into D? Why are both C and D being loaded with every open action?
Wow. Sounds fun. I'm today taking some time to fix some sysex receiving issues I've had. Maybe my VenomEd editor can help you soon :)

Cudos to Josh at Sweetwater for bringing this to my attention.
He called me up this morning to tell me about this.

I've been playing with Ignite and it's pretty cool.
Its a great idea notepad because you can capture ideas very quickly - just plug Venom into your USB jack and go. As with anything there's a learning curve, but the controls are pretty simple and if you've used any other DAW you should figure it out pretty quickly.

When you're ready Ignite is supposed to be able to export the data out for your DAW (haven't done this yet).

Thats no problem. I forgot to mention that I did actually try it with both synth in/outs turned off too but still couldnt select the synth out on the green button. But anyway I unistalled, reinstalled and followed the instructions again and now it works great! Now finally i can make some nasty noise with this synth!

So thanks a lot for your help and thanks to mkdr for making this vst happen

One little thing I have noticed though, is that when I hit a key on the synth, the corresponding key on the piano roll doesnt highlight like it does with my soft synths. Not really a big deal but does this happen with anyone else? (I'm not even sure if this is normal as the venom is the first hardware synth I've ever used.)

Post

I'll have to try that one. I never have the piano keys showing on the vst. Just the main control page.

Glad it finally worked for you too!

(Really first hardware synth? Wow. I'm on a hardware kick yet again and my house is rapidly filling AGAIN with hardware stuff)

Yes, that looks cool.
Also got the call and email.

Sweetwater generally doesn't call for this type of thing, a little surprising.

Maybe Avis has something to do with this, who knows.

Umm.. But there doesn't seem to be much "integration" going on in this though. It only utilizes Venom as a normal midi keyboard for the software. The sounds are very good though.

Btw. If someone else tries this the knobs work when you select Venoms third or fourth control row. The ones that start with FEnd Attack and AEnv Attack.

That's what I'm counting on, mkdr! Meanwhile, is this Vyzex behavior something anyone else is experiencing? Again, this is operating in Virtual Bank mode, before the point where you'd sync the editor contents onto the hardware memory...

EDIT:

I think I figured it out. I forgot that a SQS file is a complete collection of Banks A, B, C, and D. So when I opened the Rick Bonnin set, since he just created 60 presets in his SQS file they all appear in C and D opens empty. So there is no way to have, for example, his 60 in Bank C and the Sonic Boost presets in Bank D in the editor's Virtual Bank mode. That's because you're always opening a full SQS in the editor.

In the hardware Venom, on the other hand, you can sync the 60 Bonnin presets from the editor into the keyboard memory Bank C location, and then in the editor open the Sonic Boost presets and sync from the editor into the Bank D location.

I just now happened to be over at the M-Audio Venom forum, and was surprised to see this new content posted on January 28 there. I still think mkdr's editor will be the way to go, as this sounds vague, but for the sake of sharing the info:

Hey guys, I got some good news! Just got this message from Tony over at PsiCraft!

Hi Oscar,

Thanks for the kind words. The last year and a half has been a challenging one for us at Psicraft Designs as that one big firmware update to Venom broke certain elements of the editor communications that were vital to real-time program updates via SysEx: Changing sounds vis SysEx dump when the sequencer is playing actually kills the audio output momentarily and stops the sequencer playback. As you can imagine, has a serious impact on what benefit the VST automation can provide to users. Our decision was to not release the paid upgrade until we could have the problem fixed by Avid.

We were campaigning Avid to do another fix when the sale to InMusic happened, who did not acquire Taiho and a number of the other key team behind Venom. Now it looks like our only alternative is to try to redesign much of the editor to work around problems that will possibly never be fixed by the new owners - It could turn out to be an expensive proposition for us, one we might not be able to justify given the low promised price of the upgrade editor.

That's why we've been silent about the plugin upgrade this last year. We have not given up, however. A return to this project is planned once we get our latest editors out at the NAMM show in the coming weeks. I can't promise any more than that, but it is positive news for Venom users if you want to relay it on the forum. I am not going to make any announcement myself, but I won't object if you share this information or even quote key parts of this message: We still love Venom and want to see it outfitted with the best features we can provide.

Cheers,

Tony Antoniou,
Managing Director,
Psicraft Designs, Inc.

So there you have it folks, all hope is not lost, in fact, Venom users just might like the future! It's to early to tell, but it doesn't look as dark no more. feel free to discuss! (But please, if you don't like this, mind your language and keep a positive tone)

Wow, maybe we should contact Avid and let them know we are interested in getting the editor updated.
They seem to have sold a bunch....

Not holding my breath for Psicraft's editor they were supposed to release March 2011 for $20. I think VenomEd will do just fine when complete. Already has great look and feel to it. I still have the Max for Live Venom Editor plug I bought too. I want the MKDR Standalone as well.

Too bad InMusic didn't see the value of this synth. It's got a whole lot going for it.

Yeah +1, I was reading his forum and he just dissapeared not updating people and keeping them in the loop, also if it is true - why did he take ages/year s to do something Mkdr managed to do in a matter of a few weeks? It doesn't wash.

I think Mkdr's will be plenty good enough - if not better!
