I guess it's synth month because U-HE is finishing the new Hive synth

I like the idea too.

One of the things we're working on and which will not be ready before x-mas is a global preferences pane. It's the area that we want to populate with all sorts of things that we've done or that we always wanted to do. One of the things could be a switch for a random start up preset ;-)

Regarding randomizers - this is indeed one of the areas that we're not talking about yet. There's an idea (and it really is just that) for a "breeding ground" for presets within Hive. Not anything as sophisticated as Synplant, but at least some sort of interactive control over a bunch of parameters, joined with a touch of randomness.

Air use random well in their products (e.g. Loom and Vac Pro). Doesn't appear to be completely random, but contained within ranges likely to generate something useable.

The smart mode on Vac Pro is also quite cool. It reduces everything down to 8 parameters e.g. tone, complexity, fatness, punch etc. so you can quickly change the overall flavour of a preset.

Synplant is great for 'breeding' its own patches, and I also like Green Oak's method of randomising in Crystal, choosing 2 patches to determine the randomising range.
Randomisers per module would be a cool feature though.

We're thinking a bit differently about randomization. Unfortunately (…not!) we just had a smashing u-he x-mas dinner. My tummy hurts from all the food, overshadowing my poor brain device - which might hurt as well but is a bit too fuzzy to notice. If hang over permits, I can go into more detail tomorrow.

(and maybe post a new screenshot… we've gotten so much feedback, we managed to put some back in, really good stuff)

WOoow that's one awfull looking GUI ..even worse than rob papen Blade .
Urs ..wtf ...you are kidding right ?
Eyeball exchanging

Errr... No. It's a great GUI.

Besides, there will likely be more skins if this one's not your cup of tea. It's really good, though.

What's wrong with it exactly??

Looks cool to me.

GUI is a quite uninapiring, it looks way too complicated for what actually synth can do.

Hehehe, I disagree - Let's have a look at the number of parameters of Hive and, say, Sylenth1:

Sylenth1 oscillators: 48 controls, 24 visible at once, PWM requires 2 oscillators
Hive oscillators: 26 controls (two more than Sylenth1 visible at once), none hidden, but PWM available for each, tucked away in ModMatrix

Sylenth1 Filters & Mix: 19 controls, 13 visible at once, no modulations except key tracking
Hive Filters & Mix: 20 controls, none hidden, main modulations included

LFOs and Envelopes have roughly the same amount of controls. We added velocity and Trigger source to envelopes. ModMatrixes in Hive have an extra "Via Source" which allows for quick scaling of modulations, e.g. via ModWheel or Velocity.

If you piece it together, we have pretty much the same number of parameters. But we saved some in such a clever way that we could add features that people have been missing in Sylenth1, without really sacrificing anything. And it's all on one page and it has an incredibly fast workflow.

The one thing where we got really dense is the display in the middle. There will be a third view that does not contain too many controls. With that view Hive will have only 5 knobs more for all of it than what Sylenth displays for half of its voice parameters. I'd say that's a good deal for avoiding an overly tabbed interface with fewer routing options.

So indeed, we think that Sylenth1 has the best thought out feature set for a synth of its kind, and we used it as the bar to improve upon. I think we succeeded, but everyone may have his own opinion.

The expanded centre display is very much a welcome improvement over Sylenth.

Again, I love the interface! It might even look great in mother of pearl-whiteish. The only thing I'd like to see is some kinda of audio/wave import. Guessing the price it will have, this is a must have to me and should be done with every synth that is sold nowadays.

It's been a while, any sign Hive leaving the beta stage soon?
