That's all you've got?fluffy_little_something wrote:Yeah, right...
Tell you what. Since you're the one making this claim that there are R&B specific "sounds", here's what I want you to do.
1. Play a song (between 1970 and 1979) that uses a synth in an R&B song. Try to make the synth sound something that stands out, like a lead line or if a synth comp, something that's played in isolation, like the intro to Survivor's "High On You"
The sound needs to be CLEARLY audible without a lot of clutter around it. Shouldn't be hard to do.
2. Since you are the R&B synth expert, describe to me EXACTLY how the patch was created.
a. Oscillators used (number and waveforms)
b. Filters used (LP, HP, BP, etc.)
c. Envelope settings (ADSR) primarily for the filter as I know that's what you're most likely referring to.
3. Playing style, such as note bending, wheel vibrato, doesn't count. Just the raw sound of the patch without modulation. That's where the style comes in and that's where R&B clearly has its stereotyped defined style and nobody in their right mind would argue that. I am talking ONLY about the raw sound as if you simply took that patch and held down middle C for 10 seconds.
Are you FINALLY understanding what I'm talking about? There are only so many raw sounds with old vintage synths because there is only so much you can do with saw, square, pulse, triangle, sine, LPF, HPF and BPF filters. The Minimoog was probably the most complex synth (and most popular) of the era because of the 3 oscillator structure and how oscillator 3 can act as a modulator. That is ultimately what gave the Minimoog its classic sound. The Korg MS-20 of course had its own unique filters and sound.
But regardless of whether those synths were played in a rock, pop or R&B band, their sound didn't suddenly turn into something else.
And if you think that R&B musicians were the ONLY ones to turn the filter cutoff all the way down, crank up the resonance, and use the filter envelopes to get that sound that everybody here knows what I'm talking about, then you're daft. Plain, stark raving mad daft.
But by all means. Please play for us this R&B exclusive synth sound.
I can't wait to hear it.

Yeah, well he started it with his "R&B sounds are EXCLUSIVE to R&B" nonsense.Cinebient wrote:Another trainwrecked thread!

That's a silly suggestion. What makes you think I have to follow your weird instructions and waste so much time? How am I even supposed to know synth settings? I didn't program the sounds R&B artists were using, I don't even know which synths they were using.
Plus, we were talking about 80's R&B, not from 1970 thru 1979, when synths were still much less common. 70's R&B was rather different from the higly electric and electronic one of the 80's and 90's.
You know, I don't care whether or not you can tell the difference. I can, but I don't have to convince you, it doesn't matter to me.
Those who are also into R&B will know the difference and maybe someone will make an R&B sound set for Repro. And I sincerely hope it will not be you

Why would I waste my time making a sound library of sounds that would sound like any other sound library for that synth?fluffy_little_something wrote:That's a silly suggestion. That's certainly not a quote of what I said. What I am saying is that there are typical R&B synth sounds, even if some of them are occasionally also used in Pop and EDM.wagtunes wrote:Yeah, well he started it with his "R&B sounds are EXCLUSIVE to R&B" nonsense.Cinebient wrote:Another trainwrecked thread!

Just for the hell of it, I went to Youtube to find these so called "R&B Sounds" for the Prophet and while I didn't find a video for the Prophet 5, I did find one for the Prophet-6 and the guy SPECIFICALLY said R&B, Disco, House soundset for this synth with a demo of every sound.
Know what the FIRST patch was he demonstrated and even played the riff for?
Toto's Africa
WTF????
Toto is a f**king rock band.
Okay, so ENOUGH of this nonsense. It's BEYOND laughable.

I'd rather walk the plank.Cinebient wrote:You both should go for a beer mates
Okay, the total joke remark was uncalled for and I apologize. But he just pisses me off to no end with this made up history of pop, rock and R&B music. And the sad thing is, he's even older than I am so he should KNOW all this stuff. But it seems that he lived in a very shallow musical world listening to only very genre specific things and therefor thinks that THEY originated the sounds. Like when Synth XYZ came out ONLY R&B artists used it and made it sound the way they did.
I don't understand how a musical person can be so narrow minded.

- People post all kinds of nonsense on YT
- Toto made all kinds of music, not only Rock. They also made R&B stuff such as Georgy Porgy. Some of the Toto musicians played a lot for R&B artists, for instance on albums produced by Quincy Jones.

You are putting wrong words into my mouth again. I never said anywhere that only R&B artists used a synth when it came out. To the contrary, I said that they used the same synths as others, but usually programmed their own, distinct sounds on them.wagtunes wrote:I'd rather walk the plank.Cinebient wrote:You both should go for a beer mates

Like with any genre, as soon as you program your own sounds, they tend to be distinct and made for the kind of music you like and make, it is only natural.
There is nothing shallow about focusing and specializing on just one or two genres, to the contrary. I do know some of the other stuff that was played on the radio back then, even some Rock music. But I never liked it. Am I eclectic? Heck no, to the contrary. Like with sports, if I like soccer why would I care about figure skating or track and field?
