sttjelle, your track just floors me.. .it's hard to concentrate on anything else, your amazing track just keeps running in my head on loop. :hail:

This song to me has at certain moments a kind of U2 feel to it. Great singing, nice guitar work and drums though. It sounds like a live performance.

Thanx mate for the kind words.
you know its funny but sometimes i think that track sounds live as well. However far from the truth. apart from the first four bars|last four of drums , every bar of the drums is an overdub cos i suk at them and don't tolerate mistakes. every track of cool edit was used in this song(128 of them) something i will never do again too f**king much to mix, it did my head in. So crossfades galore that was my only saving grace. bahahahaha.

well here's the rest of my 'notes'. just to reiterate, they're largley accounts of how the music's affected me, triggered memories or illusions etc. truly fantastic month of sound :D  8) , not looking forward to putting a list of 10 together... :?

astanine - love this. top sounds i too have a love of such synth sounds, resembling anything natural hardly seems a qualification anyway. it's rather different to my stuff, but that's as much to do with my being unable to shake off certain traits. yep! this one's really good. it's also notable that you've achieved such pure sounds and, i assume, avoided applying copious amounts of effects. great

cold c - this one really shines in my opinion, you've got a really impressive sound, rich i guess, certainly works solo. the improvised playing's pretty impressive too. filmic in a hitchcock kind of way is my simplistic analogy. marvellously haunting yet with glimpses of jovialty (if indeed that's a word).

markleford - like nothing else. certainly the most inventive thing i've heard, perhaps ever. damn! if i'd created this there'd be a grin across my whole body. can't compare it to anything = genius.

_niko_ - cool track. i was keen to hear more from you after the sonic youth cover of last november and the latest one, 'cristmas on acid', this doesn't disappoint and surprises alittle too with the vocals shifting to the 'gutteral', there's probably a better way to describe that but i guess you'll know what i mean. the intro's superb in my opinion and the guitar phrase in the quieter sections (starting at 1:16) is a perfect blend of tone and rhythm. actually it's all great

farluker - another great piece. what i like here is you are, i believe, following your instincts, this means we get something wholly idiosyncratic and full of integrity. it actually reminds me in places of some david thomas solo stuff from the 80s (though in no way is the date relevent) - for that alone i'm enamored of it. also done in energyXT, so it gets further kudos from me.

grotman - great 'low slung' rhythm, cool vocal treatments and some really interesting guitar moments. the rhythm's the thing i'm really fascinated by, although due to my domestic environment it's necessary to keep the volume low, i'd love to whack it up to see what those frequencies are doing down there. i think this is a top track, though not my usual listening genre, the treatment of parts makes it highly listenable to these ears. hope we hear more from you round here.

marc jx8p - it'd be interesting to know what you used for this, it's incredibly lush and the influences you name are apparent of course. it's another of those peices that manages to suspend time - can that really be 4 mins up already? the rhythm/percussion treatments are really well done, nice subtlety and economy, overall a track with alot of depth. impressive.

hans m - lovely composition, especially like the kind of call and response relationship between the piano and sax, and top bass solo in the middle! this is another genre i'm ill qualified to talk about but the drums seem alittle dominant volume-wise in places, maybe just me, anyway impressive playing.

katanaman - like it. reading your post makes alot of sense - it seems you've followed your nose then. intriguing/cool/weird stuff comes from that and makes good listening for the likes of me. i like the kind of spinning whirl of this with the intermittent flashes of chords like variations in energy levels flipping along a neural axiom. weird music gets weird review. nice, like it.

col g - still reeling from your 'acid g' track of last year. top guitaring here and off the wall noises making a very enjoyable world. i hope your one of those people who can't resist stamping your mark by doing bizarre stuff, because that's how i hear and appreciate your music. please tell me it's true, or better still just continue to amaze and startle. love it.

freeztar - great. this is like a unique brand of psychedelia. love how the start just evaporates into a journey that first takes us someplace internal and then on out to the stars. i think it's superbly managed if that's the right word, i've listened to it inumerable times still don't know how i got to where it drops us off. hey come back!

sleek month - heavens! starts off with such a beautiful passage somewhat remeniscent of 'optimistic' by radiohead, then explodes into awesome indiness, travels through a raw who/kinkish section before i run out of ideas adequate to do justice to it. a kind of humbling experience, utterly fantastic.

koorby - displaying your usual elegance. boy you can make some really graceful music. i find the piano playing totally commanding, it's the space you describe with it that's so beautiful and powerful. lovely sounds and feel.

softegg - i particularly like your guitar playing and tone on this, the singer's voice is best for me on the quieter parts because when she goes for it, it rather smothers the backing alittle too much. though the style and fluidity of such music warrants a melding of voice and guitar, at times i couldn't make out the words, which was a shame ( i'm sure she's not singing, 'can't find my way to ladies night.'). still a very strong track with great dynamics and playing.

patrick9 - i totally love this because it's a performance - the inflections and character you put into your voice are somewhere between johnny cash and david bowie! the lyrics too if i understand them correctly, suggest a world of some surreal improbability. i can envisage this in a david lynch film. i'm a fan of all these references so i'm really taken with your track. fantastic.

secondskin - it's a shame you missed the deadline, are we that strict? the warmth of sound here is very nice, great rhythmic pull and shift, and the subtle melodic variations all very satisfying. for me it'd work as a soundtrack to moving around tokyo with it's polished efficiency complementing the public transport system here. nice track.

thanks for providing me with a folder full of incredible sounds :D

Let's see if I can review all the entries properly. Don't take it personally if I sound harsh. I tend to get increasingly tired towards the end, making me more difficult to please. Anyway, here it goes:

Freeztar - Very cool. Sounds like music from jazz bars. Only slightly weirder. I love the guitar and the filtered percussion. Oh, it gets weirder and weirder! That's just my sort of thing! It sounds a bit like 2 songs in one. To be honest, I think I like the "jazzy" part better but the rest makes a good end for the song.

Farlukar - Very intense synth thing you've got going on there! I like the guitars a lot but the real star of the show is that weird main synth that draws all the attention. I love it. I think the drums could be a little dirtier. To my ears, they sound too clean for this song.

Arglebargle - I've never been a big fan of this sort of music in the videogames. I always prefered the less melodic side. It's a very well done song, though, and it reminds me instantly of MegaMan. I think you should put the crash cymbals through a lo-fi effect or something because they sound a bit out of place. Other than that, I see no production flaws. Very well done, indeed.

Knockman - This song reminds me of mornings. It's the sort of music I always heard from the radio alarm clock when it's time to wake up, ever since I was 7 or something. It's not really my kind of music but I've heard them so often I've grown to love that particular feel in music. As a result, I can't help but see the imagery of looking out the window and seeing a beautiful gray day(yes, I love those supposedly ugly views). That's a great feeling to have and your song triggers it. I can't really go technical because I don't understand much about this kind of pop music. It sounds perfect to me - That's as technical as I can get.

Koorby - I like your drum programming a lot, although it seems a little too intense for the music. The music is good, in general. I think the piano sounds too loud in places, though. My favourite part of the song is when the guitar starts. Well done. It does make me feel like I'm in winter, too.

Mystahr - I like how you structure your songs around repeating patterns. This one reminds me a bit of Spacetime Continuum's Sea Biscuit stuff. Very hipnotic and atmospheric. It's not the kind of stuff I'd listen to everyday but I like it a lot at certain occasions. I think the percussion could be slightly louder, but it's fine as it is.

Wopelka - Yay! Weird music! It's one of those songs that you can't help but pay attention to when it starts. It stands out. I like the flute a lot. And the bass... what did you do to it? It sounds like it's going to jump off my speakers and eat my face. I mean it. I turned the subwoofer as low as it can go and I still felt like an earthquake was taking place!

Cold C - Very well done. You got a very full sound. I don't like this sort of stuff all that much but it does sound great.

Splatter Pattern - I think you could work on the drums a bit more. The composition's very cinematic and the drums are very flat in comparison. You should add some strategic variation to go with the cinematic feel of the song. They sound too much like they're meant for rave music.

Niko - I love your style. Very grungy. It's a good song but I think you should re-record the vocals in the chorus. They sound too forced. If you want to scream, don't hold back. The way you recorded them, it sounds like you're singing metal in the shower. Anyway, I can understand why you'd sing like that. I used to have the same problem because I was afraid of my neighbours.

Markleford - :o You've been listening to a lot of Akufen lately, haven't you? You had a very original idea. What better way to show what you like about music than making a song out of your favourites? I'm becoming a big fan of yours! First your cat's singing, now this!

Col. G - You play guitar very well. It's got a very psychadelic feel, made unique with the weird sounds. I like this. A lot.

Garret Gengler - Wow, I hate this sort of music but I can't help but love this! The melodies are so catchy! And you can pull it off without sounding cheesy.

Marc JX8P - I like the sounds, although it all sounds a bit too much like Vangelis or Jean Michel Jarre to me. I hate them. The production is great, and I like the bass a lot. I like some parts of the song better than others. Some sound too cheesy for me. I like others a lot, though. Particularly the part with the guitar and the pad with the resonant filter(along with that bass I like so much).

Mephit Blue - Another favourite of mine. What makes this song is that synth with the repeating melody. I just can't resist it's contrast with the other instruments and specially that part with "Come" being repeated.

Stjelle - The begining of the song is incredible. You pulled off a very beautiful song. I think you ruin everything with the vocoded vocals, though. It sounds too much like new age or whatever that style of music's called. After that sequence, you go even better than the begining with a great part with the piano and the pads. And after all that beauty you go back to the vocoder. If it wasn't for that, I would have loved this.

Sweetboy - TARNCE!!! Man, your production skills are very good. You don't belong in these contests. You have the next big hit of the week right there. To be honest, I hate trance, and I hate all those supersaws and stuff with a passion. But this song has potential for the sort of people who like it. It isn't PERFECT. The only thing it needs is for the supersaw sequence not to sound that loud. It takes away the energy from the end of the song.

UTM - I love your stuff. This is very good. Very at first and very impressive towards the end. I can't say much other than I like it a lot.

Auralscape - Very good song but it's too short.

Beardedone - Has anyone told you that your music sounds like a very weird version of squarepusher? I like it a lot. I always love your music, although it can be too weird for me at parts.

Zeb Virtual - I hate trance but this is the one exception. You employed the cliché sounds for a great melody. I like it a lot. It sounds very "dreamy".

Donkey Tugger - I love your style. You can make great songs in what? 1 hour? You're a machine!

Kovacs - I don't like this kind of thing too much. Well done but it's very based in guitar for me. I like guitar but I'm not too fond of this particular style.

Softegg - Very good song. The singer is off key occasionally, but her voice contrasts with your composition beautifully, in general. I like it a lot.

Patrick9 - Very, very catchy song. Definitely one of my favourites this month. I think the vocals could be a bit less expressive. The way they are, the song loses part of it's charm, but other than that, it's top notch.

Sleek Month - You're the man. You write amazing pop songs(they usually sound a lot like brit pop, which I like). I don't like the introduction all that much but as soon as the chorus kicks in, it's amazing. I love the guitar solo.

nikp2000 - I love bossa nova. Some sounds sound too much like .mid files but it IS bossa nova. I can't resist it. This particular song reminds me of the soundtrack of the third Leisure Suit Larry game.

Astanine - I like the introduction. The rest is really not my style at all. Too upbeat for me. I can imagine this as the soundtrack for some flash game.

I guess that's it. Tell me if I forgot any.

Thanks Katanaman! I'm really happy that you liked it. Squarepusher? I have never heard of them other than the passing references here. Could you recommend an alblum or two.

The piece that I wrote is a gigantic polyrhythm. Or rather, three gigantic polyrhthms (10$us to whomever can pick out the component time signatures :)).

In any case, I thought, given the obscurity of the subject matter, that something should provide some sort of touch stone for people, hence the "rave" drums. (What exactly is a "Rave" anyway?)

But I do need more drum samples, which is why I am going to my pals house to do some recording now.

Good day all!!

And thanks for your insights,K.

I suppose I must present counter-argument: if it actually were "genuius", I probably wouldn't be whoring at a day-job that I despise! :P

Actually never heard of this "Akufen" character, as I'm afraid that I really don't listen to any "out-there" music! Suggested stuff?

A fan? Perhaps I can eventually quit that day-job if I play my cards right. ;)

"Hard Normal Daddy" is my favourite. Some songs in that one are a lot like yours, such as "Papalon", "E8 Boogie" or "Male Pill Part 13".

How can any producer not have heard about Squarepusher? His drum programming is nearly legendary!

Well, once I heard your song I was instantly reminded of Akufen. Look around the internet for some samples. I found out about him in Ishkur's Guide to electronic music at http://www.ishkur.com. Browse around the jungle section. I think you can listen to a sample under Glitch.

For some reason the vocals don't fit too well into the rest of the track. Maybe a bit of processing could do the trick. Otherwise, nice heavy guitar work and drums. It does seem to lack some energy though, maybe some compressors would help there (because it can't be the enthousiasm which is very clear!).
Hm, yeah the vocals could definately have been better, though I have to say I only dislike some parts really, next time better, hopefully.

Thanks mate. Mystahr mentioned that also about the vocals in the refrain, though I don't find it that bad. I usually try to track vocals during daytime, because of the neighbours but recorded this in the evening, so maybe there was some subtle fear at play that kept me from screaming really loud...

Big extra special thanks to all of you for the reviews!

It's Boddington's Pub Ale, Goose Island, Guiness (of course) and Grolsch Amber Ale. Not Donk's Boss, but I can't find that where I live.

i'm afraid in my world 'genius' almost automatically means such a situation. if we got paid for merely being inventive , i'd have made a fortune just off of what i can do with cous-cous.
