And the only context I see here is that your post was initially prompted by his insinuation that rapping was easy.
when did i say you were being hypocritical?
right then. I did misinterpret you on that one. apologies.
you basically jumped on me because you're upset that others were poking fun at a genre of music you like in another thread.
wait... what??? When did I say I like trance in that thread? Again, I asked a rather straight forward question without interjecting my opinion of any musical genre.
i never said i like rap, in fact, most of it i don't like. and i don't like trance either. the difference is that i believe freestyle rapping is not easy to do *however* i believe that producing present day trance *is* easy to do.

so how does that make me hypocritical?
The part I found hypocritical was that you were rather quick to jump on this Clint guy for his 'easy' comment, after you've spent much time making the same claims in that other thread.

Anyway, we're going in circles now.

If anyone knows of anyone standing up for this sort of attitude in serious academic criticism I'd be very interested to know...
So true. Welcome to the post modern! But even back "in the day" artists copied galore... both as a learning tool and a way to reproduce a work in a time when there was no good way of of making a replica. Look at our world now. Audio, photographic and video recording tools are so good it's nearly effortless to make a replica of anything. Perhaps not perfect but today I can get Starry Night on a coffee mug at the mall but not too long ago the only way I'd have a chance to see it would be to go to a museum. Since only the wealthy could travel that made viewing such masterpieces a past-time of the well off. Now that mug is so cheap I can smash it, put the pieces in a snow globe and viola, new art. Damn that Duchamp. Soon as you put a urinal in a museum rules go out the window. May they rest in piece! (peace)

Overall, I love where this is going. True musical masterpieces... are still few and far between, but the fact that it's cheap to hear music and make it bring the power to the people. It's not what they (we) make, it's just the fact that we're all making it. I work in a fairly unique way (not too unique though, there's a bunch of people on www.loopersdelight.com doing the same thing more or less) All my music is loop based... but I'm making the loops. In real time. I'm plagiarizing myself. (OK, I have to say I'm also using MIDI loops and tools like Spectrasonics Stylus RMX for percussion) I play a line, feed it into a free plug in called Mobius, play another over it and so on... some layers I let fade over time always getting replaced by new material, some remain static over the course of the piece. All of this is happening in RAM, so unless I hit record (which I rarely do) all the music I made goes away forever. My wife thinks this is crazy, but I love it. No offense, but I could care less what anyone thinks of my music. I make it for me. If I want to use pieces of pre-made loops or samples from my favorite sci-fi movies, so be it.

Today we are people making music for ourselves first and the community second. Who here makes enough on their music to 100% live off it? I bet not many. Some would call that bad, but I think it's good. We are the new folk music.

Pretty moronic answer, but I'll try to explain better anyway.
Let's say that all of a sudden anybody who can prepare two eggs can open a restaurant. Let's say that they DO open a restaurant. Let's say that every time I feel like going to the restaurant (therefore expecting to eat good food prepared by capable cooks who can make better food than me) I am swamped by a huge choice, because there's a gazillion restaurants to choose from. Let's say that - because anybody thinks they can open a restaurant - most of them serve horrible dishes, or stuff I could make myself with even better results.
Now, this would be bad enough already, but let's say that all of those people drag you into their restaurants and force you to eat what they serve, whwther you want it or not.
That's exctly the situation we have today - wherever you go, you are forced to put up with crappy music blasting out of loudspeakers, even if you have to shout over the counter to order whatever.
And even if it was - and occasionaly it is - good music, used in that way it would lose its dignity completely.
Music is emotions, not constantly blaring background, for chrissake.

so loops are like fried eggs?

So basically you're speaking of quantitative vs qualitative thought.

yes?

not that this is epistemology or anything.
