Awwwwwwwwww!

The other day, there was a discussion about through-zero flanging. I wanted to see how ÜberMod could do at the task. Here's my take on it:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.2" presetName="TapeFlange" Mix="1" Depth="0.386999995" StereoWidth="0" Delay="0" Feedback="0" Spread="0.5" Slope="0.5" Skew="0.5" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0" DiffSize="0" DiffModRate="0.0450450443" DiffModDepth="0.497000009" LowCut="0" HighCut="1" SpatialXover="0.0904522613" DetuneRate="0.0130130127" DetuneDepth="1" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0" OverMod="0" DriveInGain="0.25" DriveOutGain="0.75" DriveNoiseGain="0" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.0416666679" DiffEnable="1" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.375"/>

It sounds pretty good, but there isn't the absolute cancellation that would be optimum for tape flanging. I'm using the Diffusion section to add some little "wiggles" to the sound, and the multiple interpolated delay taps in there are each adding a little phase delay to the sound, which will affect the cancellation.

A slightly tweaked version of this effect creates some nice, stomach churning stereo image manipulation:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.2" presetName="GypsyEyes" Mix="1" Depth="0" StereoWidth="1" Delay="0" Feedback="0" Spread="0.5" Slope="0.5" Skew="0.5" Random="0" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="0" DiffSize="0" DiffModRate="0.0340340324" DiffModDepth="0.708999991" LowCut="0" HighCut="1" SpatialXover="0.0703517571" DetuneRate="0.0130130127" DetuneDepth="1" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0" OverMod="0" DriveInGain="0.25" DriveOutGain="0.75" DriveNoiseGain="0" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.0416666679" DiffEnable="1" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.375"/>

This reminds me of the "inverted" tape flanging on "Electric Ladyland," versus the standard flanging where both signals have the same phase.

Sean: when I tried to listen to that preset, I noticed that opening the preset menu does not seem to work for the 64 bit version of the VST in REAPER (while it works as expected for e.g. the 64 bit version of Live; the other versions, more or less - the menu may stick around when navigating away and closing the plug-in window). Next, I tried Vee3 to see if this issue also happens there, and indeed, it does. Should I report this to the REAPER devs as well?

Nice presets, btw. :)

Is this on OSX? If so, use the 64-bit AU in Reaper. There is some strange interaction between the Juce 64-bit VST wrapper and Reaper.

Right, I forgot to mention that - indeed, I'm on OS X (10.8.3). And yes, I can use either AU or bitbridged x32 VST version just fine, just wanted to let you know about it. I already suspected it had more to do with Juce than the specific plug-in, but couldn't think of any other plug-ins using Juce of the top off my head to verify.

Amazing response time, btw. :)

I'm currently in the process of updating all my plugins to the latest Juce code, in order to port things to AAX. The menu issue you describe may be fixed in the latest Juce tip, or it may not. I'll find out soon enough.

Today is one of those days where I came up with a name, and decided to design a preset around it:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.2" presetName="Bowlrog" Mix="1" Depth="0.5" StereoWidth="0.5" Delay="0" Feedback="0.407999992" Spread="1" Slope="0" Skew="0" Random="0.995999992" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="1" DiffSize="0.232653067" DiffModRate="0.292292297" DiffModDepth="0.832000017" LowCut="0" HighCut="0.660301507" SpatialXover="0.145728648" DetuneRate="0.552552581" DetuneDepth="0.5" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0" OverMod="0.0959595963" DriveInGain="0.508333325" DriveOutGain="0.516666651" DriveNoiseGain="0" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0" type="0.375" DiffEnable="0" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.25"/>

Vocal/drum destruction. Obliterates all sense of pitch.

That's just sick, Sean. And then as you automate the width and feedback parameter your head implodes in a nice smooth swish. Great work!

Any idea when one's former perceptual acuity returns?

That is a crazy preset, and it's kind of a jumping off point for other crazy things. Like maxing out the delay.

Or cranking up the feedback to 100% and playing with depth, delay, and width for the next 10 minutes without playing another note into it...

I just tried that. It is pretty spooky. The "Poltergeist" backwards reverb is happening, but with weird random pitches.

Take the last prest. Make the delay time really long using the Sync setting, and add diffusion. Tt turns into a really terrifying soundscape / reverb thingy:

<ValhallaUberMod pluginVersion="1.0.1" presetName="BowelrogVerb" Mix="1" Depth="0.5" StereoWidth="0.5" Delay="0" Feedback="0.407999992" Spread="1" Slope="0" Skew="0" Random="0.995999992" TapGain="0.5" Diffusion="1" DiffSize="0.232653067" DiffModRate="0.292292297" DiffModDepth="0.832000017" LowCut="0" HighCut="0.660301507" SpatialXover="0.145728648" DetuneRate="0.552552581" DetuneDepth="0.5" VibratoRate="0.298245579" VibratoDepth="0" OverMod="0.0959595963" DriveInGain="0.508333325" DriveOutGain="0.516666651" DriveNoiseGain="0" FeedbackRotate="0.5" SmoothingTime="0.0990990996" ColorMode="0" DelaySync="0.352941185" type="0.375" DiffEnable="1" Drive="1" DrivePrePost="0" Speed="0" InputPan="0.25"/>

This was more of an excuse to spell "Bowelrog" correctly. I am 12 years old.

I'm thinking that a break from that AAX coding could be a good idea :hihi:

I've taken a break from AAX for a little while.

The actual coding is going pretty well. In case anyone is interested, here's the process for converting my old Juce 1.53 plugins to Juce 2.0.x plugins with AAX targets:

- create a new Introjucer project for the plugin (Introjucer is how you build projects for Juce plugins), linking to the latest Juce code tip
- bring over all the files from the old project
- build in Xcode
- fix several hundred errors that are caused by Juce code changes
- text in beta build of Pro Tools

However, after this I'm supposed to "sign the binary" with some Pace tool (Eden). This has been very confusing. I was presuming that I was just an idiot, but the recent issues with the iLok website has led me to conclude that things are actually kind of chaotic with Pace in general right now, and that I was trying to learn a tool that was in complete transition. The Pace issues should be calm by next week, so I'll head back to the AAX mines then.

I see, so you're actually suffering withdrawals from AAX coding.
A rare but nevertheless nasty condition.
