Sepheritoh - Pleased to Meet You
This didn't really do it for me, Seph. There's some nice guitar work in there, but it felt formless. There's a real soundtrack atmosphere to the rest of the music which I didn't think the guitar was comfortable with.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a French movie to be made in 2017.I like the off-beat feel and the rhythm is enhanced by the camping accordion chords. Good bassline, too. Again - this is your own genre, which is admirable.

Wow - nice brass work
I like the burbling synth and the drums individually, but I'm not sure they "gel" together.
The composition is cool, though - the brass is great - good mix, production etc. Well done that man

I like the atmosphere this piece has and the supercompressed drums are great. Nice scratchy widdlings and the stabby bass synth is cool, too.

Thanks to all those who have taken the time and trouble to review the entries. It really is a labour of love and one that I don’t feel competent to do myself.
No, not a cop out – I’m just not sufficiently familiar with most (90%) of the genres offered here to be able to judge. Just a long-time folkie in the process of getting sucked into my computer.
I have got my favourites, of course, which reflect my own bias and warped sensibilities. I’ll vote for them when the time comes.
I appreciate all your comments on “Bird on the Wing” and I can see that there is a lot of room for improvement, (except nobody has mentioned the guitar work, which I was quite pleased with).
So… Onward and, er, onward in the quest for the 2 minute masterpiece.

I'll say it again: Some month we might as well have a "not-my-cup-of-tea party" theme! Every month when the reviews come up I see that wonderfully descriptive cliché repeated over and over. Everyone here would be a winner at the not-my-cup-of-tea party. Hell it would be interesting to deliberately make opposite aesthetic judgments at each step of the creative process just to see how awful the result would be. Not deliberately poor or bad sounding - just not your normal approach. Then when the reviews of "Hey this really IS my cup of tea" came in, you wouldn't know whether to cringe or gush.

"not my cup of tea" to me means " I didn't like this."
I'm quite sure anyone else reading that comment about their track would take it the same way -
Crucially, though , what you are also saying is "but then, I don't like this genre anyway".
You could play "Pretty Vacant" to an orchestra conductor and he would say "not my cup of tea". That doesn't mean it's not the greatest punk song ever.
I think we all understand that we all have different tastes. "NMCOT" is just a way of saying "I think techno is shit, but I'm not going to call your track shit, because I appreciate that it is your labour of love and that it took some skill and talent to make it"

Believe me, I understand perfectly well what it means and it doesn’t bother me insomuch as I think it’s a bit of a cop-out. I mean, there’s a lot of stuff submitted here that isn’t My (personal) COT either, but I try not to use the phrase in critique because it doesn’t add any information to the review. It just colors-in the artist’s perception of the reviewer. That’s OK too, I tend to explain my point of view and provide some personal details in many of my reviews so the artist knows where I’m coming from. But saying a song isn’t MCOT isn’t the same thing as saying, “I had a bad experience with boy bands and I hate glossy-slick production values so when I heard all that vocal pitch-correction and layered harmonies in your track, I puked all over my keyboard.”
Of course, just saying the song ain’t MCOT, is a lot shorter (especially now that we have an acronym!) but it’s not useful feedback. That’s all.
Please feel free to say it all you want. But since it’s really a descriptor of the person who utters the statement rather than the song reviewed, I think it’s better suited as a guiding principle of the creative process.

It's not supposed to be feedback per se - it has quite a different function. As I see it the phrase NMCOT acts as a bumber for negative feedback, or a way to avoid giving some harsh criticism. You're right. I understand but I hope we all don't take the criticism too personally because music so subjective. Anytime one hears value judgments about their work, it’s hard not to take it personally, and predicating a review with a blanket judgment about a subset of music doesn’t seem that diplomatic to me. Excellent drum and bass work. The piano is great too. I sometimes find that synths sound a bit out of place in this type of music to me. But then, I guess the point is that there are NO rules.
I can really appreciate the incredible skills and work that went into this, even if I do find it a bit challenging for my poor brain :hih:
Thanks Scuzzphut! Challengig, schmallenging (right Dr. Wackler?) ... I'm sure your brain is much bigger than mine, as you do software programming right? That makes you brainer by far.
I guess by synths you mean the TubuLeSax which is really the only synth in the mix as the rest of the Sounds are Sample-based ones in ST2. I guess on of these days I need to get some Giga libraries,eh?
I really appreciate the effort you have put into reviewing.

Well in my case, instead of not making comments on the songs that are "not my cup of tea", I prefer to state that I am not qualified to make an objective review of the song, that's all. I think it's better for someone to know that it's not my style, rather then the person wondering why I did not leave any comments at all.
Millions of people love Marilyn Manson, but if he posted in this forum, chances are I would tell him it's "not my cup of tea". What's wrong with that?
It's so funny. Some people complain that some reviewers are too nice, and those of us who openly state which songs didn't do it for us get critisized. Other than "it's not my cup of tea" I don't know how else to formulate my reply. The song doesn't do it for me, that's all. I'm not "feeling" it.
I posted a hip hop song. If someone does not like hip hop, I would much prefer a "sorry it's not my cup of tea" answer rather than wondering why that person did not review my track. Do they like hip hop but thought my song was crap?
