"Eighth Day" Mystahr
There's something a bit too intellectual about this to make me think it's a theme - and I don't mean that bass figure I contributed in the second part! No, I mean that there's definitely an organized structure to this which bears the hallmarks of a theme - a recognizable melody and potential association with a sci-fi subject - but without contextual clues I would not make that connection intuitively. And it's got a lot of obvious interesting sonic subtleties that demand attention. I really like the first half's build (though I'm not crazy about the snare sound [in the build]). You could probably bring the bass volume up to match mine - although I like the cathartic way the mood of the piece changes when my bass kicks-in. The change in volume is part of the dynamic so you'd have to be careful not to lose that. I also think the synthy-picked-guitar-string lead sound would benefit from some other kind of handling in the last couple measures. It's great in the beginning build and the legato-glide passage over the bass change, but in the last part it doesn't add anything. My favorite sound is the droney sustained pad in the first measure or so after my bass comes in. It's cuts-out abuptly, though - and is that a clip I hear when it stops (1:25)? That pad sound is so pleasantly familiar and terrific. You must give me your recipe!

Joenco : it's a masterpiece in my book, ultra gloomy and plenty of images in my head !

Ahriakin : for Farscape I don't know but close, anyway very catchy but too short

Gaz : I'am just hooked, some sounds I don't like otherwise trippy

Bastien : excellent !!!!! great horrid racket ! only trouble is that the second part is quieter and the ear has trouble to reajust but the 1 : 30 to 1 :45 part is a real gem !

AndreasE : doesn't sound like a tragedy to me, rather " sunny " and big cities in alien skies.

InfektedM : got your track stuck in a corner of my head so you got a vote !

Wopelka : I would see it in some episodes of Stargate SG1 --> one vote

Choochcat : hmmm ... a parallel universe ? not really sci fi to me but odd enough.

rmus7 : same as Chooch so good weirdness !

Well, I voted

I didn't listen to anything until today...I gotta say, I hated this month.

I was really surprised. I expected a lot of big symphonic works, so I avoided that in my entry...

What I wasn't expecting was how many "ambient- soundscape-starting-with-a-big-sweeping-pad" things there would be.

I thought that this month was really weak compositionally...there were precious few entries that sounded like themes, and a fair amount that hardly sounded like music...

It could be argued that one word is a poem, or one note is a song...but not by me.

I like to envision the opening of Star Wars with one of these things as it's "theme"...

"Oh, yeah, star wars was great! Especially that boring beginning part with the seven minute long synth pad"...

Anyways, I just thought I should say something, piss a lot of people off and make myself thoroughly unpopular.

My track fits pretty much into your category, opening with the cliché FX type noises...

although I have to say, its walking a fine line trying to set a scene, write a theme, trying to be creative and still be able to like the music you are making..!!
Whether you like it or not, a lot of people here enjoy making ambient/atmospheric type music, and so given the opportunity to write their own movie theme, they wrote what they would want to hear...

Yep thinking about Star Wars and 2001 you remember the themes, clearly but there are so many more SciFi movies with themes that I dont remember, but must have set the scene very well without being incongruous (otherwise I would have remembered it?). An example would be the remake of Solaris, that was hardly a rousing theme, but it did the trick!

Not every movie wants or needs a PARP PARP type orchestral / Matrix style machine-gun breaks style soundrack...


But then I do agree with you about how many similar sounding tracks there are, but like I said before thats what a lot of people do at KvR!

..I like prog..I generally liked the track..needs to have a bit more feel..

yip, guilty as charged. originally it didn't have the bass and drums (apart from the military snare), and sounded incredibly Vangelis from mid 70's (Heaven & Hell, Albedo 0.39 era). Someone suggested that something more should happen with the break, and so I just wrote a quick 2 bar groove and pasted it until the end of track.. Time constraints this month. I knew I wouldn't have time to do more editting. I'm overall pleased with it, arguably the almost unmoving staccato fnuk adds to the scaryness of the advancing amoeboids... or arguably not!

Oh, I expected the opposite: all soundscapes, no symphonic. I wussed out and did a bit of both, switching gears halfway through.
