On a compressor, an Attack control is really important if you use humbuckers. I slow the attack down to let the pick attack through. They're already so accentuated on single coils that it doesn't matter as much with them.kvotchin wrote: Sun Jun 07, 2020 9:53 am So I got space for one more pedal. Thinking a phaser, compressor or second delay.
Assuming you already had a nice delay pedal, but neither phaser nor compressor, what would you be likely to get?
I am leaning towards comp: even though I mostly hate compressors on guitar, there are use cases.
If you play hardware keys, a phaser pedal is amazing on Rhodes sounds.

That Platform pedal is beast. More than I need by a lot - mono is fine, and I already have overdrive for days.
As for keys, nah, I’m fine without a phaser pedal for them. And I switch between three guitars (currently), all with very different pickups. Weighted towards humbuckers overall, but otoh, a classic strat is one of the guitars.
Appreciate all the replies. I wouldn’t even ask if it wasn’t the last available spot for pedals... tricky.

I've been sticking Dymo labels on some pedals to label knobs / list knob options (e.g. on my Digitech Polara reverb, I find the small lettering hard to read).

A few obvious things come to mind:
- some pedals (mainly drives) compress as a side effect
- serial delays can be fun; digital can complement analog; you might be missing some features, like reverse, tap tempo, MIDI...
- back when I played in a band, I did use a compressor on one song with chords and riffs
(I'd go for a phaser, cause I like phasers)

Yeah, my current delay is a DMM 1100 TT. Was thinking, if I went that way, #2 would definitely be digital. Possibly the Flashback 2...
Do love the sound of compressor into chorus, but that’s hardly going to come up often. Good point about other effects adding a bit of compression. Certainly, some of mine can. Speaking of which, comp into drive can be nice too, for crazy sustain I guess. Never tried it, but it’s popular, afaik.
Phasers are also a thing I wouldn’t use much, but occasionally it’s a thing. Analog would be the go. Something smooth and pleasant.

As a, erm, developing bassist I was a bit worried that a comp would make me less careful about my playing technique. Cannot really resist leaving it on all the time with gentle settings.
It's mah tone, man.

I never bothered with compression till I got a Peavey T-Max, which just seemed to do it naturally. Before it was a utility effect when mixing but after I sold the amp, when I stopped gigging, it had become part of my sound. Technique was never an issue as I had played so long without it, as well as acoustically.
Still miss that amp with a 4x10
.
Also, just spotted the Xvive Lemon Squeezer is 18V. Not an issue, in fact a plus, but should have checked, rather than assuming cheap=9V. Could be a better pedal than I thought.
Checked again and there's 18V and 9V, photos and descriptions of the Xvive Lemon Squeezer on different sites. Amazon have it listed as 18V for both so here’s hoping
.
Contacted Xvive and they said it was 9V.

Lemon Squeezer is probably an Orange Squeezer clone, which is fairly transparent. The Ross and Keeley compressors have that sharp attack sound that you hear all over country. Dyna Comp is fairly similar and the Boss Bass Limiters I use are that to the nth degree. Those Boss pedals are great and I imagine they can be found for cheap. The older one has an exciter (great sounding but kind of noisy) and the newer one has a ratio control.
EHX Small Stone phaser is killer and even the Behringer knock off sounds very similar. They both do a dramatic phase flip in the middle of their modulations.

My new Electro Harmonix EU96DC-200BI arrived
No battery compartment, no DC input but it does warm everything up, ever so slightly.

The Lemon Squeezer arrived and it is 18V. Xvive said it is an older version.
BTW I got a free Electro Harmonix EU96DC-200BI with my Holy Stain. Never used it but will do now I know it can add warmth
