Perhaps it is like the convenience store that blares classical music outside so that teenagers no longer loiter there? You might not be getting the message that they don't want you to hang around for too long - if at all.
Yes, it is. I'm talking about using music for what it's not supposed to.

what the hell has happened to this thread LOL!
YES, BUT ARE YOU "EFFECTIVELY UNLIMITED????"

Your post about the Divine Sidekick was pretty funny, but as far as serious discussion goes, I must admit I find you very boring, no offense meant.
You just try to demolish other people's points of view without giving any substance to yours.

Pretty moronic answer, but I'll try to explain better anyway.
Let's say that all of a sudden anybody who can prepare two eggs can open a restaurant. Let's say that they DO open a restaurant. Let's say that every time I feel like going to the restaurant (therefore expecting to eat good food prepared by capable cooks who can make better food than me) I am swamped by a huge choice, because there's a gazillion restaurants to choose from. Let's say that - because anybody thinks they can open a restaurant - most of them serve horrible dishes, or stuff I could make myself with even better results.
Now, this would be bad enough already, but let's say that all of those people drag you into their restaurants and force you to eat what they serve, whwther you want it or not.
That's exctly the situation we have today - wherever you go, you are forced to put up with crappy music blasting out of loudspeakers, even if you have to shout over the counter to order whatever.
And even if it was - and occasionaly it is - good music, used in that way it would lose its dignity completely.
Music is emotions, not constantly blaring background, for chrissake.
You know, I too hate involuntary music. I can't stand having music I don't like blaring at me whenever I walk down the wrong street. It seems to me that this is a form of noise pollution.

But what, pray tell, does this have to do with a guitarist jamming along with some drum loops, or a kid playing with loops in Acid or Garageband?

I mean, I would love it if all adolescents liked to read Flaubert or Melville or Aeschylus, but chances are that if they weren't playing with loops they would be playing some kind of first person shooter game, or maybe even Guitar Hero.

How would this improve things?

People really take this stuff too seriously. People playing with loops are no more a threat to serious musicians than a mom with a Polaroid taking snapshots of her kids birthday is a threat to serious photographers.

At the same time there are 'serious musicians' who use loops, for sketching songs, for practicing unfamiliar styles, or just because they don't want to program drums.

Yeah, like the Brits should talk about what constitutes bad food. I'd take anything on that table before I'd eat a blood pudding.

its alright, i find you to be a pretentious arrogant tit. no offence meant.

oh right, i always forget that bit. if your argument is ludicrously stretched and tenuous, and reliant on the least substantiated assumptions one can make, then saying so doesnt count on the basis of not providing a compelliong counterargument.

yeah, you got me, i capitulate. music is emotions. all of it. even the religious stuff and the ritual stuff, and the art stuff, and the aleotoric stuff, and the random stuff, and the serial stuff and the ambient stuff, and the abstract stuff. all of it. yeah.
