AFAIK they want to change this when the Roland Cloud, the subscription and Cloud Manager left the Beta status.
Something like that seemed to be mentioned at Facebook.

That's what they say ("after one year, you get to keep a plugin of your choice"). They added this to sweeten the subscription deal...

Thats great to hear about the subscription meaning the plugin can be owned after a year but I would want better choices in what way I activates this because I don't use (and don't want to) use the internet on my main DAW. Also, I'm a bit apprehensive that they might pull the plugin before the year is up.

Regarding the authorisation activation I don't know why Roland couldn't do the same authorisation activation that Propellerheads have done with Reason v6.0 to v9.5 where there is a choice to use dongle key, or machine id if you don't want to use online activation. This activation model seems to be successful since Reason hasn't been cracked since v5.

Roland Cloud had posted this at Facebook last week concerning the upcoming (!!) loyality program and internet authorization:
Roland Cloud With the forthcoming Roland Cloud loyalty program, you'll be able to pick instruments and tools that you will have access to forever, regardless of your subscription status.
Roland Cloud The details of the forthcoming Loyalty Program will explain how it all works regarding subscriptions, etc. We're looking into non-network based authentication systems, but for now it is tied to the internet. More details soon.

If you leave it a it is, it will continue to work. If you upgrade it to the Cloud version, it will only work with an active subscription, regardless of your standalone licence status.

So you should not upgrade to the Cloud version, just use your existing version.

We don't yet know whether Roland will ultimately pull the other plugins still available for sale, but it seems likely, probably when the cloud thing is out of beta.

The D50 to plugin converter at http://www.difficultaudio.com now also supports going the other way - converting plugin files back to D50 sysex dumps.

This means that people with D50, D550, or VC-1 hardware can use the plugin to edit/organise patches, and dump them back into their hardware afterwards. :tu:

Going to have to check the converter out. I don't have a D50/550, but might be fun if I find some patches on the web to convert.
The plugin sounds great, but I haven't had much time to sit and program yet, just hack some of the included presets.

To save you time, the huge archive I already converted (link earlier in this thread) basically contains every D50 sysex bank you're likely to find "out there", as it's been curated by obsessive D50 lovers for years who have meticulously added everything that's even come up...

I'd start there, if you want a good 30,000+ patches to wade through!

Ha! Thanks :D
I've only just stumbled across the thread, so I'll check back in the thread to get your link and load 'em up...30,000 is about 42 more than I can cope with though :hihi:

For Logic users, all the presets and the CultofD50 archive are now available as individual patches (so easy to search for patches by name etc).

just wrote roland directly, seems the d50 is bugged in fl studio. the juno 106 seems normal so far, i made a quick test (lol the melodies!) with 0 attacks + 1 kick as a metronome

dear Roland,

i love the d50 and still hope to obtain it somehow/some time instead of renting it which is too expensive when i use it more than 1 year! but i got HEAVY problems, i just tested for a test another plugin from you the juno 160 and it seems it works without a prob but the D50 has problems with its sync when exporting/rendering out of fl studio 12 !

hear for yourself please

Juno 106 is OK , i just put in some notes with 0 attack!

and here D50, you hear 2-3 sounds totally not with 0 attack and randomized played :/

I voted No..

The D50 is one if the least inspiring synths I've ever played

Post

To fine-tune a fader/slider one can move the mouse-cursor to "far" left ot right of the fader/slider.
(A bit like the knobs in other Roland VSTs but without rotating..)
(beside normal "shift" + mouse to fine-tune)
(I bet Ingonator has already posted this..)

In answer to the original question, I might consider it if it was available to buy outright for $100 or less, although the JD-800/990 sound more potentially interesting to me. I never owned a D-50, but I'm not immune to some amounts of nostalgia for synths that were popular when I was a teenager (there are a few classic PPG and Prophet VS sounds I still like to trot out in new songs when I can find a place for them).

No interest in cloud-based software with a monthly fee, though. The only time my recording PC sees the internet is when authorizing new plugin purchases and refreshing my iLok licenses once every 3 months, and I'd just as soon keep it that way. (I'm still using Adobe CS5 on my work/internet computer too rather than lend support to the cloud/subscription model Adobe has tried to shove down everyone's throat.)
