You can always load up a scope/analyzer plugin. The scope in Bazille would have been much more useful if you could patch into it from various points instead of just showing final output.
I got myself a Dave Jones O'Tool+ for my Eurorack setup -- dual trace scope, level meter, spectrum analyzer and tuner -- and it's been very illuminating.
Thorn doesn't need a scope IMHO, but animated modulation indicators would be nice to have.

I support the addition of Visualizations but please make them optional. I would find a lot of blinking lights and colors very distracting and it may trigger me to have (yet another) psychotic episode.

I was talking about the sound, not the price. Spectral is not being developed anymore, that's why the price has dropped so radically, I paid much more for it years ago.egbert101 wrote:Not knocking your example, which sounded brilliant btw, but how is it a substitute if LinPlug Spectral is only $49, compared to Thorn at $69, soon to be $112?Sampleconstruct wrote:Thorn is actually a good substitute for LinPlug's Spectral synthesizer, similar timbres can be achieved plus Thorn has the import from wav-feature for spectral content plus it has a basic sample player on board. Another Thorn video with a drone-pad sound:
In fact, I'm beginning to consider buying Spectral, even if support will now be non-existent.

Soya milk is (arguably!) a substitute for cow's milk. What relevance does the cost of a pint of each have?egbert101 wrote:Not knocking your example, which sounded brilliant btw, but how is it a substitute if LinPlug Spectral is only $49, compared to Thorn at $69, soon to be $112?Sampleconstruct wrote:Thorn is actually a good substitute for LinPlug's Spectral synthesizer, similar timbres can be achieved plus Thorn has the import from wav-feature for spectral content plus it has a basic sample player on board. What kind of a comparison is that? Spectral was discontinued, you will get no support, and there won't be any bugfixes, or feature upgrades. Thorn just came out, is actively supported, and will receive bugfixes, and probably also feature upgrade. And it is just $20 more than a discontinued product, which some developers even would give away, when they cease development. Of course, your decision, but, i don't see much room for such a comparison, when it's comparing apples and oranges. And, for the intro price, Thorn is a total bargain.egbert101 wrote:Not knocking your example, which sounded brilliant btw, but how is it a substitute if LinPlug Spectral is only $49, compared to Thorn at $69, soon to be $112?Sampleconstruct wrote:Thorn is actually a good substitute for LinPlug's Spectral synthesizer, similar timbres can be achieved plus Thorn has the import from wav-feature for spectral content plus it has a basic sample player on board. As Simon explained, he is talking about the sound of the synths. That is what 'substitute' means in this context. I can't think of any context in which the word 'substitute' has got anything to do with the price of two things?egbert101 wrote:No idea what you're talking about. LinPlug are (or were) a perfectly good creator of synthesizers, and Spectral is a very decent synth.lnikj wrote: Soya milk is (arguably!) a substitute for cow's milk. I know Spectral is a great synth. I've owned it for years. I discussed my views on the similarities and differences between the features of Thorn and Spectral earlier in this thread.
They are sufficiently different to justify owning both (if you can afford it) IMHO.

As much as I love Spectral, it can't do what Thorn can do. It's apples and oranges as far as functionality. I own both and I'm glad I own both.

I expect most people reading this thread have got a plethora of straightforward subtractives, a handful of FM synths, a few additives, several wavetable synths, a bunch of semi-modulars etc .. so it's not like having TWO spectral synths is totally decadentwagtunes wrote:As much as I love Spectral, it can't do what Thorn can do. I'm not so familiar with Spectral. Isn't Thorn's Harmonic Filter similar to that? You can draw shapes in it.egbert101 wrote:That tells me nothing. I've already said that Spectral has that unusual ability to create your own filter shapes. Can Thorn do that? What exactly makes Thorn better?wagtunes wrote:As much as I love Spectral, it can't do what Thorn can do. It's apples and oranges as far as functionality. I own both and I'm glad I own both.
