It is basically an honor system.

My guess is a person posting their original music on streaming and failing to get noticed are going to get ignored. Same with a musician who creates for personal enjoyment.

But if you become a viral sensation and are getting endorsements from Pepsi and what not, you might want to make sure you are doing everything you can not to get sued.

Yes.

Originally this was a free plugin but I suspect the original owners sold this to a company or something.

The crippled version is still useful but they are doing what they can to make it a commercial product.

I think it was a commercial product for awhile even in version 2 where people had an option to purchase but since the free version was too similar must have not got many sales. (or maybe their IOS app was commercial).

Nonetheless it is commercial now but the demo version is still pretty powerful.

Honestly it would be cool if more companies had similar models.
My understanding is that the original coder had made the plugin code open source and discoDSP continued the development with a free and a paid tier.

However, I'm not really enthusiastic when features that used to be part of the free version become premium features. I understand if a premium version contains additional features on top, but why strip the free version of features?

OB-Xd 2.15 is here - VST3 finally lands in the free version.

After countless "when will VST3 be free?" requests, we've finally delivered. OB-Xd 2.15 brings VST3 support to the free build while keeping our non-commercial license intact.

The good stuff:
  • VST3 in free version for macOS, Windows and Linux (yes, really).
  • Complete framework overhaul - should play nicer with your DAW.
  • Enhanced ADSR and key tracking.
  • UI cleanup.
  • Stability fixes some of you reported.
  • Full codebase revision.
Still registered-only: AAX and LV2 formats

This isn't just a "we added VST3 and called it a day" update. We've been under the hood fixing years of accumulated quirks and modernizing the codebase. Should feel more solid across the board.

Before anyone asks - yes, your old presets will still work. No, we didn't change the sound engine. And yes, the registered version still gets you commercial rights.

Windows antivirus does not let me extract it.

VST2 version of this new build is broken in FL Studio. None of the presets work and it only outputs white noise, silence or random clicks.

This is the response I got from DiscoDSP when I took the time to inform them of this bug using the bug report function on their website:
Hello,

Technical support is exclusively available to licensed users. To receive assistance with your OB-Xd issues, kindly purchase a license.

Best regards,

Not sure how I'm supposed to buy a licence for what is explicitly a free version of the plugin.

Hello,

Thank you for reporting the false positive detection. I can confirm that obxd215freewindows.zip is clean - this appears to be an incorrect detection by Windows Defender.

The file has been submitted to Microsoft for analysis (ID: 0f043152-ba36-4ed2-8916-5995240b1047) and shows "No malware detected" in their latest scan. This is a common false positive that occurs with audio plugins.

You can safely whitelist the file in your antivirus or wait for Microsoft to update their definitions.

OB-Xd 2.16 Released

After digging into some nasty bugs that have been lurking for a while, we've squashed new ones. OB-Xd 2.16 fixes the MIDI performance bottleneck that was causing timing issues and hanging notes, plus resolves that annoying envelope detune muting bug.

The fixes:
  • MIDI processing performance completely overhauled - no more O(n²) inefficiency causing hanging notes
  • Envelope detune bug fixed - won't mute your sound anymore when you move the knob
  • Program menus now show formatted numbers (000: Default, 001: Bass Lead, etc.)
  • Better MIDI controller support and note handling
  • Improved session cleanup
This isn't just cosmetic - these are proper under-the-hood fixes that should make your workflow much smoother, especially if you've been dealing with stuck notes or envelope weirdness.

OB-Xd 2.16.1 Hotfix Released

Windows users, we've got you covered. If you downloaded 2.16 and ran into garbled text in the Program name menus, grab the hotfix. It's already baked into the main release package.

What's fixed:
  • Program name display corruption on Windows completely resolved
  • Text rendering now properly displays program names instead of garbled characters
  • All existing 2.16 fixes remain intact (MIDI performance, envelope detune, etc.)
This was a Windows-specific rendering issue that slipped through testing. The hotfix is seamless. Same performance improvements, same bug fixes, just with proper text display.

Download the updated package: https://github.com/reales/OB-Xd/release ... indows.zip

If you're on Mac or Linux, you're all set with the original 2.16 release. Windows users should grab this updated version for the complete experience.

When I downloaded this file from your github link, Windows Defender on Windows 11 immediately flagged this file with

Trojan:Script/Sabsik.FL.A!ml

Why would this be in your file that is freeware?

Some Windows users hit a false positive with Obxd216FreeWindows.zip getting flagged as malware. We've already sorted this out with Microsoft.

What happened:
  • Windows Defender flagged the file due to lack of reputation data
  • Submitted to Microsoft for analysis - they confirmed it's clean
  • Both Windows Defender and SmartScreen have now cleared the file
Current status:
  • File officially marked as "Not malware" by Microsoft
  • Downloads should work without warnings (may take up to 12 hours to fully propagate)
  • This was just overly cautious detection on new file - completely normal for new software
No action needed on your end. The software is legitimate and safe. False positives happen until they build reputation data in Microsoft's systems.
