I actually found a Nova Systems for sale now, I didn't last time you mentioned it. For $250Uncle E wrote: Sat Aug 09, 2025 2:54 pm Check out the TC Nova Systems. Lush effects are what TC is known for and the overdrives are analog, with two modes equivalent to a Tube Screamer and a Rat
Real amps vs modelling and plugin amps

That’s a lot. I often see them for around $100.

What can I say, this is Norway. It's the first I've seen for sale as well. Come to think of it though, I already have both the Tube Screamer and the Rat pedals, so no point getting it for the analogue dirt pedals. As for the GX-700 I at least didn't already have the Turbo Overdrive, Turbo Distortion and the "Metal". I had a look at Boss distortions released up to 1996 not familiar to me. Those I found were HM-3 Hyper Metal, MZ-2 Digital Metalizer and XT-2 Xtortion. All discontinued. It's definitely not the HM-3 Hyper Metal or the MZ-2 Digital Metalizer, comparing it with YouTube videos I found it kind of sounds as the XT-2 Xtortion, which would make sense as this was released the same year

Yeah I had a Nova system unit for a while which I bought for that exact reason.Uncle E wrote: Sat Aug 09, 2025 2:54 pmCheck out the TC Nova Systems. The overdrives remind me of the ME-50. Hmm not sure.
Twas built like a tank and the sounds were very nice all around .. butttt unfortunately it’s very confusing to operate /program.
I swear it had a mind of its own.
After a few months of trying I sold it and went back to individual pedals. a Tone City Mickey (Rat clone ) was one. Quite good that one

Thank you. Crossing it off my list.Naillerz78 wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 11:02 am Yeah I had a Nova system unit for a while which I bought for that exact reason.

I swear it had a mind of its own.lots of multi function knobs and different coloured lights to memorise etc.
It's funny that after all these years, the DG Stomp with the preamp bypassed still ticks a lot of the boxes for me: small, programmable, easy to use, and good variety of effects. The Boss MS-3 would probably be my ultimate but people say the effects aren't as good as the 500 and 200 series pedals.

Its a shame, as there isn’t much like it that combines the two in one.
I’ve been googling last night re highly rated digital distortion and reviewing videos ..not much convinced me tbh.
something left field came up on a forum thread named the ‘Kurzweil Mangler’. It’s an older rack unit. can’t find sound clips or video demo tho.
an all analogue fx such as a Boss Me-5 perhaps be an option. I think it’s been mentioned not sure.
Been checking out this UAD Ruby pedal as I like Vox tones.. but it sounds a bit ..strange to my ears.
This lil Hotone gets closer to realism for me.. it’s a contender for next purchase @ $150
Another ‘fun’ one I came across was the Zoom MS-50g /70g multi stop. It has really cool’ lo-fi’ effects sounds.
Love the simplicity and that it’s Batt-op also. Nice retro sounding reverbs and modulation fx.

It's not really for guitar.Naillerz78 wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 9:02 pm something left field came up on a forum thread named the ‘Kurzweil Mangler’. It’s an older rack unit. can’t find sound clips or video demo tho.
Yes, I think I brought that up here or in another thread. The push button editing looks painful, though.an all analogue fx such as a Boss Me-5 perhaps be an option. I think it’s been mentioned not sure.
Yes, people love it. The MS-70CDR is the one most people rave about. Actually, that one would probably be perfect for me.Another ‘fun’ one I came across was the Zoom MS-50g /70g multi stop. It has really cool’ lo-fi’ effects sounds.

There is that ‘hack’ that always sounded like a fun thing to do where you can install the Zoom effects from one model into another, there is room for many more than are factory installed (like you could cram dozens of extra effects from across the entire Zoom line into a cheap G1ON or whatever). It was talked about a lot, haven’t heard much about it recently.Uncle E wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 10:29 pmYes, people love it. The MS-70CDR is the one most people rave about. Here’s a link to a resource site, but I don’t know how up to date it is:

That’s a bummer re the Me-5. I would’ve thought they’d have kept the knobs it being all analougueUncle E wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 10:29 pmYes, I think I brought that up here or in another thread. Awesome! Thanks! I had a G5n recently and hated it, but it was really the drives and expression pedal that turned me off. I never got past them far enough to explore the other effects.guitarzan wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 11:30 pm There is that ‘hack’ that always sounded like a fun thing to do where you can install the Zoom effects from one model into another, there is room for many more than are factory installed (like you could cram dozens of extra effects from across the entire Zoom line into a cheap G1ON or whatever). I’ve still got an old TC G-major rack unit at my folks house in Europe. I got it cheap as it had a damaged controller wheel. Very lush fx tho if I recall. Anyone had one of those?
Wish I had it here to mess with and try fix up..hard to find those lil plastic parts tho from the wheel apparently. It was a common issue.
A professional guitarist friend of mine had a rack set up the G major , plus a Mesa Boogie amp rack and Boogie 2x12 cab. With a MusicMan silhouette.
He sounded like… God.

So I absolutely love the Zoom units as inexpensive multieffects and consider them to be among the best value a beginner can spend money on in music - consider that they contain a tuner, and (for the bass ones at least) drum loops. They are great practice tools for beginners and teaching tools for what various effects sound like.
Additionally I really liked many of their effects, especially for the price.
But you absolutely can't consider them to be faithful to the effects they are modeling. You have to think of them as kind of their own thing. And yeah, the distortions all suck for guitar. Might be kind of cool to stick after a synth though... but noisy.
Also - at least 80% of the Zoom presets are absolute trash.
