Mine has been in my desktop computers usb port all the time and I have had three desktops replaced al consecutively... in other words my usb dongle has outlasted my PCs.. If you have more than one computer, you want to use the program for, then I advise you to buy with the dongle, a USB hub (small light one). Actually, after using Cubase, Largo, Retrologue, PadShop Pro and the beta Avenger for some time with both my desktop and laptop, I begin to prefer the USB e-licenser! You still need to install the e-licenser software and have your Steinberg account though, but it is now for management and updating your account rather than protection.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

This is a seriously capable synth. Especially if those Osc's get added in time as sources to the drum sequencer, I can see me sometimes just using it for rhythm, never mind anything else. Also a thank you for being so active here, sharing everything as you go and responding to user suggestions - really refreshing.

apart from the 3 Macro knobs, you also have 2 Macro buttons, Modwheel and Pitchwheel, Aftertouch, Breath Controllers, Exp. Pedal and Sus Pedal or all your external midi controllers (CCs) for further external modulations. All these can be assigned in the modmatrix. Furthermore you can automate every parameter in your DAW of course.

I leave my desktop PC powered on 24/7 too. I also use an eLicenser (Cubase) that I've had for 3 years now.
I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever continually plugged into a USB3 hub (since I ran out of USB ports for all my various devices). I've even had some hard power-off situations where storms or construction have left me without electrical service. But the eLicenser is still running like a champ.
That said, I'm just one data point -- your mileage may vary.

Sure but compared to Massive which has 8, 3 is pretty basic. Just look at what great sound designers like Leap into the Void can do with that much scope. In fact 8 is really the minimum and sometimes I run out of Macros even in Massive (although 8 also maps nicely to most controllers). Macros are not for simple things that you can map to controllers, it's great to have that too of course, but well programmed macros enable complex timbral changes and can literally morph an entire patch between multiple 'poles'.

to my experience, sound designers hate it, when they have to assign 8 (or even more) macros. So in the end, they will only be assigned with boring and basic stuff, like cutoff or osc transpose... yay (if they are assigned at all):)
So we decided to focus on 6 main elements (3macro, 2buttons, 1modwhl), and after seeing now how this has been used in the factory library, it was the right decision. Higher numbers are not always better. Furthermore Avenger already has so many knobs, it would have been an overkill to display 10 macros in the GUI.
All of Avengers' Factory Presets will come with 3 Macros, 2 MacroButtons and 1 Modwheel assignments. This are up to 6 sources to morph the sound - and they actually do something cool with the sound - I think thats more important

As a sound designer who has worked professionally with plugins that use 8 or more macro controls, I say: It depends on how much you get paid per preset. .. having said that, I agree with you! It's huge amounts of work when you have so many macro controls. Especially if a large number of them need to do "drastic things" to the sound.

@Manuel: As Avenger will have a big number of target controls for automation (I don't know what this request means in terms of coding) - would be possible to nest them in categories as in this example? Yes, I know there is "Touch" function but I thought it worth mentioning.
