Backup or not this is the worst deal in history that I can remember. To have a library worth $800...go to nothing....first time in the history of VST anyway.
Even our old sample libraries were purchased with a way to recover over time. This is/was a big deal, and to have Apple not honor anything past July is basically crap to me.
Camel took a crap on their customer base. Period.
You cannot explain it to me any other way.
Promises for two year for an update and then this. You could give me five years to create a backup. Bull.
This has not happened in our community in this way ever that I remember. A precedent has been set and we allowed it. Now the sky is the limit. Who knows who will jack us next.

I'm not sure what you're proposing. Do you mean we should've launched a class action lawsuit?thejonsolo wrote:...A precedent has been set and we allowed it. Now the sky is the limit. Who knows who will jack us next.

Also this is not unprecedented. There was Redmatica (worse situation and depending on when you bought their software, the valuation could have been more). And wasn't there something similar with Kjaerhus too?Orbit-50 wrote:With all due respects, and I say this lovinglythejonsolo wrote:Backup or not this is the worst deal in history that I can remember. Who knows who will jack us next., I think you're taking this just a little bit far. Everyone was given lots of time to back up their purchases (which to be honest Camel Audio didn't have to do that because of the no warranties expressed or implied if I am correct) so I think they really did the right thing for their customers at the wishes of Ben and crew. Alchemy and all the other stuff will still work for a good while until it is completely obsolete so don't be so negative. It's really not that bad. What kind of blows was the fact that those who would have liked to top off their Alchemy soundbank collection didn't get a chance to. Other than that, if everyone backed up, it's all good for a long while. Remember, nothing is forever. Repeat after me, nothing is forever. Now, I'm going to go back to watching my favorite commercial with Hannah and her horse and...

Camel actually did right by their customers by allowing so much time and allowing transfers, so people who felt their products were worthless could get rid of them by selling to someone else who didn't think they were worthless.

I am pretty sure Kjaerhus just stopped responding to people and they had a C/R plug that no one could use.

No warranties? I wonder if this is normal. It sounds like a small print scam. Do any other developers have a no warranty mention in their terms? Is the whole plug-in business like this?Orbit-50 wrote:which to be honest Camel Audio didn't have to do that because of the no warranties expressed or implied if I am correctthejonsolo wrote:Backup or not this is the worst deal in history that I can remember. Or did you think that a plugin maker is legally bound to maintain a plugin indefinitely, even if they go out of business or sell?
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

When you have a 20 year old hardware synth whose creators have closed their business but you can still fix it if it's broken by getting specialised help. There should be a software "repair" company that should patch your Alchemy to be used with newer OS for a small "repair" fee. But that wouldn't be legal so this brings forward a different discussion. Is the Alchemy license still REAL after the company's demise?Ben H wrote:It's pretty normal.cocoazenith wrote:No warranties? I wonder if this is normal. It sounds like a small print scam. You wonder if "no warranty" is normal?? Have you not been reading any software license agreements EVER??? It has almost ALWAYS been this way. The only piece of software I saw have an actual warranty was something from the early 1980s, and that only covered something like "within a reasonable degree of functionality" or something like that.
Yes, the software industry has pretty much ZERO accountability and has pretty much always been that way. By all means start fighting about it, but the battle against EULAs was lost decades ago. I think the DMCA or the patriot act or other such evil shit in the USA actually made the wretched EULAs get considered actual binding contracts (which they never were before but almost noone ever challenged them, mostly because they didn't read them and those who did read them knew nothing about contract law).

I'll be using it for a long time. Am putting it on another cloud server now though. One didn't feel safe enough, paranoid.

This should surprise no one; frankly, I'm baffled it doesn't happen more often. Software is finally starting to show its true value as an impermanent solution, a product with a perpetually unpredictable lifespan. This is why I loathe the disingenuous comparisons to hardware and the treatment of software as if it were a product of equal value; it never has been. When it was novel, software was grossly overpriced. Today, there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on any of the stuff we need--even though there are some who still will.
After the incessant price gimmicks popularized by Waves and IK Multimedia, I made a commitment to seriously reduce the amount of money and investment I will put into new products that are virtualIzed (i.e. software emulations). If you commit to spending less, or find comparable solutions in freeware, you will be less hurt when this happens again
I, too, have a few hundred dollars wrapped up in this product; however, I wrote this experience off as a final lesson learned. If I continue to drop obscene amounts of money on something that can become obsolete without warning , I can only be angry with myself when it inevitably fails
