I don't know what the fudge has happened with v1.01, but the vocoder just wouldn't work anymore, so I rolled back to v1.0 and now the instrument doesn't work. I'm on OSX 10.8.3, Live 9.0.4, elicenser

the vocoder is working now, but in a project saved with v1.0.1, the synth loads with no sound, then when I reload a new instance, it loads, plays for half a bar, then one channel drops out, then the other, or it keeps playing with one channel, (ie. either left or right) then when I change patches the synth continues to play only one channel.

Hi Theo,

i got no Mac and no Logic so i could not help much there i guess.

Is is not possible to use the procedures that were posted for Ableton Live 9, Reaper 4 or Studio One some pages ago?

BTW like already mentioned i'll collect those at a new thread at the Xils Lab forum soon.

Personally i found that such kind of routing seems to be quite straightforward in Live 9 as no extra menus or matrix is involved and all routing could be done with drop-down menus in the mixer view.

After i thought pages ago i had it, i today settled to compare all vocoders (TBH to see whether i wanted to buy this, as the strings are after all that, covered for me well and truly by loomer.. this sounds great but it's *very* european sounding.. we call that woggy in australia :hihi: (and yes i am a greek myself) but i don't think they'll fit my music.)

So it comes down to the vocoder.. and...i can't test it.. in the front line : Waves Morphoder, Logic Evoc20, Antares Articulator, Orange Vocoder V3 - Carrier - Fab Filter Twin 2 lush pad.

All are working.. so far they are all on par.. they sound completely different to eachother but all are clearly intelligible.. so i really want to see if Xils can add something to that table. I know it can with it's own internal synth of course, but i still want to see how it vocodes using an internal carrier. I need help setting up, please.

The vocal is a stereo audio file (yes i know, stereo is stupid but for some reason all sample houses provide stereo vocals), and twin is on an instrument track in logic playing a 3 note pad sequence in key with the vocal, looping every 4 bars. I have outputed it to a bus in case it needs to be sidechained, as instruments can be sidechained into anything via busses in logic

but i can't get it to work. :help:

Also i guess my patches question was overlooked.. wanted to know if that's it and covers the whole "synth" or if there is much more that can be gotten out of it.

I am having crazy problems with polyphony and i am only using a qwerty keyboard! doing a 3 note chord progression on almost any long attack patch causes cutting very fast :(

have you tried...

Hi Sqigls,

Sorry to hear that.

Could you contact Xils via Xils lab contact utility, and if its possible give us the live project that doesnt work. It would be very helpfull, and we'll keep you informed.

Hi Theo,

Well the VP330 has its own character as a Vocoder, as well as a String Machine. It was massively used by artists like vangelis, or Laurie Anderson etc. it is inteligible, as seen on the examples I made on Xils site. Its a ten band Vocoder, with 10 physical cards inside. And its a recreation of *that* famous sound. Its not intended to replace another Vocoder, and otoh I doubt that any other Vocoder can sound as the V+.

As for the Library, well most string machines, Analog Choir come with far less presets afaics. its possible to make some other ones, but it will stay in the "Strings*/Choir/Ensemble" department. ( Though indeed you can do a lot with variations on this ). By this I mean that some people will spend a lot of money to get in the end one Rhodes sound, or one Piano sound, or one Saxophone sound emulated, so in that sense the V+ is both much less expensive and much more versatile. If you listen to the approach of the different SDs on the V+, you'll see that indeed only the Strings as seen by Xavier, or Ingo, or the Humble me do sound very different.

But its only ONE part of the V+ : You also have the Vocoder part. Not only is it more versatile than the original machine, but you can get a huge variety of different tones by feeding its input with very various signals. Just insert a pattern of bland 808 toms in the V+ and turn on the Water mode, and you'll see what I mean. Insert some E keys, and its still another story. Not counting the Phaser, the Ensemble unit, and even the reverb, all have their own character. so this means that you get a lot with the V+.

Then you have the analog character of all these things. I think its just gorgeous. Just play and the light is on. You dont have to layer things, adds false unisson, tons of effects on the V+ to make it sound organic : Its already there, as soon as you have put the hands on your keys. But here taste can vary so YMMV.

As for the polyphony, no idea, with a keyboard as controlller and in plethora of hosts there are no known problems. Maybe its specific to the computer Keyboard input. I'd suggest you just use notation input in your daw and see how it plays black, il will give a valid indication if there's a real problem or not with the polyphony.

yes.. it's very digital sounding.. with 100 bands and 2x oversampling my cpu can't take it even one instance at 1024 buffer.

at 32 bands etc it sounds no better than anything else i have.

but thanks.

I really don't like using melda plugins, plus they have broken latency compensation in logic. I'm not a fan, sorry. Wrong person :)
no worries, hadnt tried it myself. just wanted to make sure you hadnt missed any ;)

TheoM wrote:Nope i can't even get the vocoder to work the normal way..

plug xils 5 as an "au effect instrument" on an instrument track.. sidechain vocal into it.. none of the vocoder presets do anything.. you can see the keys being pressed though.. this is going on days now and i am pretty frustrated.

I have never even needed a manual for any of the other vocoders.. they just work!
Just to exclude two simple possible failures:

In most hosts you have to start playback on your host to get a sound from the vocoder. :)
Another one could be you have the sidechain switch in the Vocoder sub-menu at the wrong position.

track 1 : diversion
track 2 : sample

1) drop XILS V+ efx version on sample; select sidechain from menu

2) select 'Sends/Sidechain->XILS' from diversion mixer strip ; Select Sidechain/XILS V+ from the drop/down below Diversion

3) turn on 'Ext Synth' volume, switch 'Sidechain select' switch in XILS V+

Still having trouble with this. For one, I notice that in your picture it says XILS V+ efx. Mine only says XILS V+. I don't have an XILS V+ efx listed anywhere. The regular XILS V+ does show up under the effects section in the browser, but there is no efx listed by the XILS V+ name. Also I can't get the recorded audio file armed to record like you have in the picture. What am I missing? Thanks.

Post

Don't care about the 'efx'. I renamed those plugins 'cause I liked XILS 3's naming better. XILS 3 -> instrument, XILS 3 efx -> effect. So XILS V+ efx is just you normal XILS V+ .dll (not the instrument, the effect one).

Regarding the recorded file. Do you have it drag/dropped into one track? And the carrier instrument (diversion in the example above) into the other track? Do you have 'play' button pressed? Do you have the sidechain switch switched in V+? Do the green led in V+ blink?

Post

yes, i think so. i was under the impression that it would sound without having to press keys? i get it to work if i press the keys, but then i'm hearing the instrument as well.

Post

The green light only blinks when i press the keys.
