That is really nice to read.

As a casual observer... I agree.

To make sure my personal perception of that wasn't somehow skewed, after reading some of the comments saying how they (Bitwig the company) over-hyped the product, I went back to that original "Coming Soon" web page and read it all the way through.

I was actually a little surprised on how little marketing hype was in that text. I had expected to see much more. One of the few things I saw there that was potentially hype was "World Class Instruments" or devices or something ... thinking that if the instruments actually didn't turn out to sound as good as that description it might turn out to be hype... exaggeration.

Otherwise, I didn't see very much hype there at all in that web page.

Yes, it´s all true and cute but the bottom line is that BWS is not ready for the prime time.
The mistake was not to release public beta last year. They should have made the most basic stuff work first and build for that functionality. An introductory price for still in beta would´ve been the right way. Now that it´s 1.0 and should somewhat work it is more disappointing.
They didn´t create the hype that was going on though.
"Coming soon" for 2 years is bit of a stretch don´t you think?
But I´m going to re-check it when it´s 2.0.

All my external instruments run about 5-6ms out of time, and with no way to offset track timing it makes them pretty unusable. (Offsetting per clip isn't acceptable)

If only they had the latency adjustment on their external instrument plugin there would be no problem as I could just set that to 5-6ms, like I do in Live.

I know some people are saying the timing is great but it's no different to Live's for me, although without the means to fix it!

How many "serious" companies (i.e. companies planning a major software release, not your average free plugin developer) release public betas?

The answer is none.

There are lots of reasons why, one of the primary reasons being you do not want your competitors to see what you are up to. It's just common business sense.

Peace,
Andy.

It was no secret what they are up to, so public beta would´ve been good. The state they are in right now would´ve been smoothed out with the public beta and they could have bought some extra time with the beta state.
The competitors? What about them? Bitwig should play their own game, competitors can do what they please. And what is the big secret competitors can´t find out?
But.. I´m going to re-check 2.0. until then.. good luck BW.

U-He did with Diva which is where i created my factory presets for it. They also offered a discount at that stage which was the only discount they did for Diva AFAIK.
They are also offering a beta of Bazille since quite a while.

Linplug did it with Spectral and offered a free license (i got one...) if you manage to deliver 12 patches good enough to be in the final selection for the factory presets.

AFAIK there was also one for Xils Lab Synthix including a group buy with additional discounts for registered Xils Lab customers.

Microsoft also offers publioc betas for their new major Windows versions since quite a while.

Also many game developers have started doing this, and theres by far more money (and more to lose if their competitors can do something similar/better) in their releases than anything done in the music realm

And a lot of it is about severe bugs and deficiencies in Bitwig. Way to blame the problems in Bitwig on users there Thomas!

and the beta testers created hype too...

"You can't expect a 1.0 version be perfect"

WTF

300 euros, you kind of expect basic functionality and somewhat bug free software. This is clearly NOT the case. Most software evolves and more features are added, this is fine but this is not ready for the masses, demanding lots of cash for it nonetheless. This'll be a new ableton story, new releases=new bugs, til the end.....

Ok guys, I leave you to your worldview.

All the best and may you all find what you are looking for, where- and whatever that may be.

Let me know when YOU are releasing your own DAW! I'll be happy to give it a go ;-)

Cheers, over and out,

Tom

Ingo
Adobe Lightroom does public betas

ps - Bitwig is free to do it however they wish... I'm just saying public betas are not uncommon.
