Cubase fans 3.1 full details...worth it?

Hi christianmusicmaker,
first I want to say that I own both: Sonar as Cubase so I can compare them and also, they are both "mine". So I can hardly say "mine is better than yours".
Please, just read again the sentence which I have quoted. Your point is: 1. Any sequencer but cubase gets an update very quick, 2. cubase users have to manage their way thru a lot of bugs for a whole year.
To me it seems that actually you were starting this "mine is better..." story.
I wont quote your post but just say you some things (BTW, I absolutely don't work for Steinberg):
Until the last update you couldn't turn the metronome on/off in sonar while your song was playing. If you would have do that, you would hear a clear gap. This was reported, it is not something that happens only on my machine.
So, this is not a big deal for you, neither is for me when I am in my homestudio, but it is a big deal if I have a singer/performer recording a part where he/she needs a metronome (for example because it is a part of a song with no drums). In cubase (logic, tracktion, protools, whatever) I can turn on the metronome just before that part comes in and the singer gets a rhythmic referrence.
You couldn't do this on sonar4 for almost a year after the version is released (we will better not talk about sonar being the last sequencer which gets an audiometronome and that we had to wait for a year to be able to use it).
On sonar3, if I remember right, you couldn't even turn the metronome on/off while the song was playing. You had to decide from the beginning if it would run or not.
You see, something is very important for me, while you or other people work in a completely different way and don't even observe those things. Is this a showstopper: yes and no! It depends how important it is for you.
I don't turn this topic into a cubase vs. sonar thread, but you have to admit that parts of your initial topic sounded somehow provocative.

It's still there? Ah...kritikon wrote:Which line tool? The one in the piano roll editor, you mean...when you're editing a whole group of velocities at the bottom? That one has always been there - it's in my SX2.Oh, but bring back the velocity line tool. I miss that from VST5

I think there is always a better way to express an opinion or ask a question and I will gladly admit that I could have asked my question's about Cubase in a better way.mojkarma wrote:

I take your points onboard, I remember some years back when I first heard of bug fixes in Sequencers I thought, oh well just the odd issue then that slipped through the net, I had no idea how complex sequencers are and how difficult, it appears, the process is to fix them. Maybe a longer development cycle would help.
I read somewhere that Logic and Cubase used to be released every 18 - 24 months. Maybe to get a 100% or 99% usable host it needs at least a 18 month long development cycle.
Reason has been known to be very stable, it has been for me but it appears for Cakewalk and Steinberg to stay in business they have to release their products every year and then release patches for any bugs that slip through the net.
Not ideal for the customer of course but there does not appear to be any other way for developers like Steinberg and Cakewalk to stay in business.
A strange cycle indeed.
I guess the ideal gameplan would be to buy a product not as soon as its released, but after at least two patches are available, that hopefully fix any remaining bugs.
As we are in September now, no doubt a 10 - 20 page thread about Sonar 5 and CubaseSX4 will dominate the host forum, so it all starts up again.

Hey christianmusicm,
Cubase have been around since the days of Atari ST and Pro-24 (shit I am getting old)... Steinberg is responsible for "track line playback/recording" that has been adopted/copied by everyone including Cakewalk, VST's, VSTI's, ASIO, MROS, VLINK, etc; etc;... Cubase, be it version 1, 2 or 3 is an excellent product and let's face it - everybody in this business watches closely Steinberg's development and copies Its ideas as they come - including Cakewalk... Every respectable sequencer these days will have to be "Steinberg compatible" in some way and adopt/include some of Steinbergs technologies... The bottom line is, we would not have the likes of Sonar, Traction, Live, etc; as they are today, without what Steinberg was yesterday...
Kind Regards,

Certainly Steinberg have made huge strides that many benefit from today.
It will be interesting to see what SX4 and Sonar 5 offer us this time.

Well now that you mention it...mojkarma wrote: You couldn't do this on sonar4 for almost a year after the version is released (we will better not talk about sonar being the last sequencer which gets an audiometronome and that we had to wait for a year to be able to use it).
True enough, however, SONAR was one of the first sequencers to get, for example, full PDC and Acid looping capabilities (SONAR1). So I don't think this is indicative of Cakewalk's progress but more a matter of priorities (not that those priorities are always beneficial to every user - this is why people use different hosts). I won't slag another's software (I'm a musician first)- I'm just pointing out that one can take sequencer X and sequencer Y and it becomes quite easy to make a tit for tat argument in eithers favor regarding who was first and/or who is more visionary or innovative.

I should probably go read a guitar forum for my pleasure then before it's too late, eh?...christianmusicmaker wrote: As we are in September now, no doubt a 10 - 20 page thread about Sonar 5 and CubaseSX4 will dominate the host forum, so it all starts up again.
Or even possibly get outdoors more...read more books...(and eat better)

You almost forgot you were doing a live P5v.2 demo once you really got into playing the keys, man you *were* having fun on that live demo.
Are we going to see the Hoover - Ryan combination again?
