i don't care (except sex pistols, how dare you! who cares about representing punk? it's a great album, especially being the "punk" equivalent of the monkees or backstreet boys), they are opinions, but since most of what you mention are on that "most overrated album" list linked a few posts back i'll add...
The Smiths...i don't get it...those overly "clever" lyrics, pedestrian music, and hype hype hype....i just don't get it...and those ladies shirts...don't get it...
(EDIT) A HA! you editied before i got my post out...figures, you are smiths fan, say no more, say no more....

This is fun. As for the Pistols, you summed it up perfectly with the Backstreet Boys. That's all they were, a crafted band put together to cash in on a fad by a man who feeds off of others talents (Malcolm Mclaren for those too young)
As for The Smiths, well, with all due respect to our atlantic cousins, maybe they were just too "English" ? I wouldn't class myself as a fan, but I certainly appreciate them. "Strangeways Here We Come" is a fine album.
The one thing I don't get is the Beatles bashing. Maybe it's because I grew up with them, studied them, know every tune, played many in the countless covers bands I've been in, I don't know.... I just don't get how people can class them as overated. Fine, if you don't like them, that's cool, but you can certainly never deny their talent and influence.
I'm not a big Elvis fan, not by a long shot, but he is influential, as is Dylan, again, not a love of mine, but his skills & talent are legendary and he has permeated music to such a deep level.
But hey, opinions are free and we are all entitled to them
What I would say tho' is that I will certainly be checking out some of the artists/bands mentioned here that I have not heard of, just to form my own opinions. I often wonder how many people who "bash" bands like the Beatles just do it because they want to be seen as bucking a trend, and not because they have listened to and appreciated the skills and talents therein
i don't know about everyone else but when i say that the beatles are "overrated", that doesn't mean that i don't think they are a great and wonderful band because they definitely are. That's almost indesputable. All i meant is that they are overrated. they are probably the most highly praised rock band of all time. They definitely deserve almost all of that praise, but maybe not all 100% of it, that's all.

Benny Bear wrote:You could say that all bands and singers that are signed up are overrated. Isn't that the job of record companies and publicists to overrate them. They give out publicity that makes mediocre musicians sound like they have grown an extra arm to play what some session musician played. Song writers become visionaries according to the interviews.
Of course this doesn't mean that they are bad, it just means that they are not as good as the hype suggests. I include some singers and bands that I like in this criticism.
sooooo true as well
wow, i almost forgot about that one.Chase wrote:PUFF DADDY
also, don't forget about squarepusher and i think someone already mentioned boards of canada.
also dr dre - though, i'm sure he has some talent, it;s just the whole hip hop thing. (wow, we can make a semi-cool sounding loop, now let's play it over and over for 5 minutes while people rhyme over it). hmmm

I'll brace myself and go for Pink Floyd. In my opinion the lyrics and music, for the most part, are horridly overwrought. Radiohead seem to be functioning in a similar sphere (transposed to this era though) to me.

Now, on to the topic. I know some of these have been covered but my list looks better with them in:
Morrissey - Why no-one killed that fcuker before he grew up is beyond me.
Pearl Jam - There are literally thousands of bands who, given the same opportunities as those losers, could have done as well or better.
Coldplay, Radiohead, et al - Simpering wimps, one and all.
Beck - Wanker!
Bjork - Boring as bat-shit.
Kylie Minogue - Just because she can sing better than she can act doesn't make her any good. And she looks like a slutty school girl as opposed to a sexy woman.
VNV Nation - In fact all trance and trance related music. its like endless remixes of the same thing as opposed to different songs in the same genre. In fact remixes would have more variety.
Drum 'n' Bass - See above.
Reggae - Same.
Well, that will do for starters.
i agree with some(most) of that...but don't you like that band that did the song "i'll stop the world and melt with you"...wasn't that in your top ten list a while back? kind of .....uhhh, forget it...
Kylie Minogue - And she looks like a slutty school girl as opposed to a sexy woman.
what's your point?
