Architeuthis,
The reason I've not replied is because I don't think your tests prove "better" or "worse", just different.

I don't think you're comparing like with like, either, so it's debateable as to whether anyone can make a genuine comparison.

Never mind, I invited him myself.

No, that is true, perhaps - but if you were genuinely prove a point, then you would compare Rayspace with a convolution reverb with a modelled room which you re-create in rayspace.

Why not try a convolution reverb to see what results you get?

Architeuthis, I think the problem is that you don't like the sound of early reflections, the little slapbacks that occur before the onset of a reverb tail in a real space. Up until recently, artificial reverb processors could not replicate these. Rayspace simulates a real space, which is usually not what you hear on a reverb-heavy album; most 'verbs used in the studio over the last few decades are of the Lexicon/Eventide outboard variety, which emulate the reverb tail, but not the (often thousands of) little "slaps". I suspect this is the "grainy" sound you're hearing- with quick, percussive sounds especially, the ERs can have a sizzle-like quality. This imitates the actual, physical world, and it's often not similar to the artificial reverberations you may be used to.
There are, of course, ways to minimize this in RaySpace, much like there are ways to minimize the effects of an overly reflective room in real life. It's why they mount foam tiles and bass traps in studios. Increase the "Absorb" parameter in the "Wall" section, and definitely keep the sound sources and the listening position AWAY from outer walls in larger rooms, and experiment with smaller rooms. Avoid corners as well, in fact try a round room. The "Drum: Round Chamber" preset is fairly ER-free.
I hope that helps some; this isn't the sort of 'verb you use on everything, but I hope it comes in useful for you at some point. Demo some Plate reverbs and impulses, by the way; those are ER-free and probably sound closer to your ideal reverb.

Oh, you just had to ruin it, didn't you ;)
