It is DX only WITH Sonar... but can be purchased as a VST & DX effect package for just $39 if you are not interested in Sonar.

In terms of getting it bundled with Sonar, it is (together with all the Sonitus plugs) now included in the Studio Edition as well as Producer Edition. It is not locked to Sonar only, but also works fine in FL Studio, Adobe Audition, etc - any DX host (but obviously not in VST-only hosts such as Live or Tracktion).

Nope, VST too.

To clarify, with the Sonar bundle you don't get the VST version - it has to be bought seperately.

its when the gate closes that's were all the plug ins fall short! a smooth closing gate is what I'm looking for

Which have you tried? The Sonitus one has very smooth closing if you adjust the Release and Hold carefully

I'll say it again... this is one very underrated series of freebies. Ugly as sin but really good at what they do.
For the simplest chopping, I'd recommend Klanglabs free MIDI controlled Microgater; very simple conceptually, but finely configurable and operates without annoying clicks or other artifacts.

I liked the Getablitch but after a while in FL I get an "Access violation at address --------- in module "FLEngine.dll".... Something like that. It worked for a bit but later even failed to load.

I honestly rarely use a gate nowadays apart from simple noise chopping. Which I usually do with the included auadio tools within Cubase...which works perfectly well as long as you set a reasonable enough release. If I want to do anything fancier, I'm a believer in the manual audio editing chore and simply converting everything into parts and using amp envelopes. Am I alone in thinking that Cubase SX lost another trick from VST when it lost the dynamic events you could use in the lane editors? Or are they now included in SX3? They were potentially powerful tools, or would have been if they had the same implementation as VST but with the envelope shaping of SX...

I miss those dynamic events.

I hate to say it, but for sidechaing gates for h/w, I actually rate a Behringer unit I have of old

An old Quad gate that is very capable. Either that or a modular Digitech unit that has both gating and noise shaping. S/w seems to be a bit too accurate for my tastes for esoteric gating. I like the stuttering you could get with h/w gates - it made for some interesting FX on things like loops. I have difficulty getting that randomness with any s/w gate...they seem to just open/close and do exactly what they are told to do.

I'm not sure I'd be prepared to spend much money on a fancy plugin gate though...considering the price of Floorfish, it does most jobs very nicely.

Perhaps if Voxengo release a cheap one - hopefully with a nicer-looking GUI than his usual ones (sorry Aleksey...I just don't get along with your GUIs for some reason...). But if Kjaerhus release a fancy gate at the usual price - I can't see myself being tempted in the slightest. Their comps, Eqs etc are worth every cent, but ultimately I (and I suspect most users) think a gate is pretty much a gate is a gate.

What I'd like to see a gate become is more than just a gate. A sort of a "shaping" tool. Like I said, a lot of the old drumsounds have their signature because of how the gate sounded. That makes them "not just a gate" but a creative tool to shape the transients.

A gate can be extremely quick to setup to "weed out" the sustained parts of drumloops, instrument loops, vocal phrases etc. It's a much more creative tool than what I see a lot of people here think.

A gate with a user definable low threshold (that is, where the gate drops down to) can be an awesome drumloop reshaper tool when combined with a compressor. This way you can use it as a reversed transient enhancer as it dips down to a set level after each peak. Then the compressor in the chain again smacks the living daylights out of the peaks to re-shape them.

I could go on and on about how useful a truly musical gate could be but the bottom line is, it's useless if it's not smooth enough (floorfish for instance is "nearly" there but it's not smooth enough and it's a bit too slow).
