I thought I'd try the demo yesterday (as I wanted to try it on some noisy tapes I've copied to digital) but its got a very uninformative interface - hard to even tell if buttons are on or off and there's no manual or presets so I couldn't tell what to do with it really and what settings to use.
There's a 30 day demo of a version with noise reduction:

no manual!
presets!!
WTF!
sometimes you people just plain amaze me with your purified idiotism.
There's what, *three* knobs? How hard can it be? You tweak, you listen.

Yes it is.
Kingston - I can use my ears to an extent but not being a super engineer type like you obviously are I don't trust them enough to just go by that and I know my knowledge and experience has limits - I was hoping for an explanation of what they do and how to use them best from someone better informed. It may only have 3 knobs and a couple of buttons but they are rather esoteric looking, don't give good feedback and theres nothing explaining what they do or how and when to use them optimally - a few tutorial presets to start from would not go amiss and neither would a helpfile or manual.

The manual, and even technical explanation of the process is at their site. Presets are completely useless in a source material dependant plugin like this, just like they are useless with EQs.aMUSEd wrote:Yes it is.
Kingston - I expect presets in any VST and I also expect a manual - it may have 3 knobs but I don't know what they do and not being a super engineer type like your obviously are I don't trust my own ears. Anything without at least some tutorial presets I don't use.
As for trusting your ears, if you don't overdo things, this is quite the safe plugin to apply all over the place, especially if you stick with high/low values below 3. Sometimes it even works in mastering. Oh and the noise reduction part is a tad outdated. While it might work as an effect, or a simplistic gate, something like Voxengo Redunoise is far superior to this in all things noise reduction.

No there's no manual afaics on the site - just a page of technical and "scientific" explanations that tell me nothing about how to actually use it and seem aimed at technicians.

Oh dear. There's a very clear explanation of what it does. Very clear graphs to visualise what it does with each parameter.
What more would you need? A hand in hand detailed walkthrough of tweaking two knobs? You're making it needlessly difficult on yourself.

Its not clear at all - the site is obviously aimed more at people with technical expertise and it seems to me the whole site is trying to blind people with "science".

Well, what more could you expect from an ex-NASA engineer, a *real* rocket scientist.
I'm sure he's not trying to blind anyone, it's just happens to be the only language he speaks.

I can see that - and I can see you are completely comfortable with that but you seem to find it hard to understand that not everyone is as comfortable with such technical explanations (now if it was biology or psychology it would be different). That is why I would prefer it if they also explained it better for us mere mortals - what each knob does to the sound, when best to use certain combinations of elements, what not to do - simple practical explanation - and maybe yes a few tutorial or beginners presets. Even a company like Voxengo understand this - they are very good at discussing the science at a very high level when needed but are also not afraid to come down of their platform and talk to the us relative amateurs (and provide presets) in a language we understand. I'm not being thick - I just want practical tips on realworld use, not essays on bloody rocket science.
