I think that you should buy the one I use, because that is undoubtedly the best.
Live's take on MIDI recording wasn't for me. But there take on audio recording is THE most fun I ever had (and that's from testing demos since v4+). If I had more free time outside from work, I would remix for days! 8)

that's actually a very good idea...perhaps a bit of a pain in the ass, but it's worth a try...
One of the really cool things about ORION [and yes, there are many] is that it allows you to link your audio editor of choice into the Playlist. So you just right-click on an audio clip, choose "Edit" and it launches your application of choice. Its great because every time you go back to ORION it automagically reloads the file so you can go back and forth with ease. To me that make much more sense that reinventing the wheel by having some half-arsed editor built-in.
you've been singing the praises of Orion for so long, i really should give it a look see...
BTW, those Orion instruments rock! That's more reasons to test it out.

Clearly learning from the master; we've had it for years and this is the first time I've mentioned it and anyone else has indicated its not unique. I suppose the rest of the world had to catch up eventually.
I think i remember cakewalk 5.0 having it.... this was back in 97 i believe.

Cakewalk has been doing this ever since I can remember (I started using Cakewalk w/ version 8 of Pro Audio (98-99?), back when Cakewalk products were considered "toys"...

Even better, if you select only a part of an audio clip in Sonar, that part of the audio clip is automatically selected when the file is opened in Sound Forge.

I remember trying Orion back then and being quite impressed, but it was quite buggy at that time (on my machine, anyway). But Pro Audio evolved into Sonar, and I must say that Sonar being what it is now, for my needs, Orion would be redundant.

BTW Bones, thanks for that new version of your FM synth - it really came in at the right moment.

wow, pretty neat!

Wonder if any other host/editor combination does this.

Pretty funny actually when you consider that Sonic Foundry and Cakewalk never could agree when it came to dx plug-ins (SF plug-ins wouldn't work in Cakewalk products because they had a different interpretation of the dx standard). Yet the integration between SF (now Sony)'s Wave Editor and Cakewalk's product is just flawless...

I would suspect that you could achieve something similar w/ Cubase/Wavelab - would only make sens...

That's news to me. Thanks for pointing it out; I swear, I learn something new every day here.

That's one of those things w/ Cakewalk products... For ages people bashed them because they didn't have this or that feature... And to a point it was okay... Most of the times, these features would be found on top of the feature list in other sequencers... They were everywhere.

On the other hand, ProAudio/Sonar is full of little features like that that you just can't live w/o once you learned to use them.

I'm pretty much a Live, Cubase and Wavelab guy with a just enough knowledge of Sonar to be dangerous. Good to know this stuff. Thanks.

Dan
So can't Cubase export all individual tracks? Are you sure Dan? I think that's quite odd, because it is a pretty standard feature. In addition to all the others listed, Sonar can also do this by the way.

I agree that it works freat with Live 6, though. 8)

At least it has MIDI inpute quantise unlike Sonar  .

I was being tongue in cheek though - not serious.

I'm confused.... AFAIK Sonar does not allow you to import/export individual clips to your external wave editor at all. In order to do this you have to search for, download and install a different application called SONAR utilities that was put together by a Sonar user called Bruce Ennis, who was fed up of the fact that unlike most of the others, SONAR does not have this feature (and some others he also included).

Switching from Tracktion to Sonar, I was amazed to find it will not integrate with a wave editor of its own accord. Only by searching on their forum did I discover the workaround of using this third party application. :?

Unless I have been asleep at the wheel...no.

Just to be sure we are all talking about the same thing, here is what I mean. I have 12 various tracks (audio and midi/vsti) in an arrangement. Instead of mixing down to a stereo master track I want to output to 12 WAV tracks all rendered with their respective fx settings and I want to do this as one action not 12 exports. As far as I know, Cubase can't do this. In fact someone wrote a macro so you wouldn't have to stand by the machine for 12 cycles but it wasn't an ideal workflow.

Could be wrong but that's my story and i am sticking to it. :)

Those that can, do. Those that can't, argue about it on k-v-r

Yes, we're talking about the same thing. Maybe they will have this in Cubase 4. Strange though!
The only other big program I know of that doesn't do this is Reason - I would love to that in the next version.

As for Live's export, it is much easier than the Sonar or Audition ones, which I looked at for comparisson because of this thread. It really is so easy - in the already simple export dialog you simply select "All Tracks" instead of "Mix". I tried it with a composition and then loaded the tracks into Audition for further mixing - it works a dream, and for those that like to use Live for composing and another DAW for final mixing, it will save a lot of time.

I did the same and was pleased to see it work so well. This gives me the ability to mix in other hosts if I want.

I am just amazed to hear everyone say that many other hosts can do this as a one-step operation. I was totally unaware :o

Cheers,

But seriously, in all the hoopla surrounding Live 6's new features it just hit me about a feature I have wanted for a long time - the ability to render all tracks at the same time as separate files. Are there any other hosts that can do this or is this a Live first?
Audition does it. Probably Reaper too.
Just to confirm, Reaper does this too. It's one of the options in their render dialog. The only twist is that it renders SELECTED tracks, so you have to select all tracks first, if ya wannem all. you can also choose to render the whole timeline, or just a section.
