What I don't get, is why this topic seems to get brought up about once a month...
Maybe we need a sticky thread explaining that Waves sound good and aren't all that expensive. :D

Something...

and that's another thing........

It used to be that people got BANNISHED around here for calling something "gay".........

but now, a much more hateful word "faggot/fag" is used consistantly (certainly not just this thread)

what's up with that?

Why get all worked up over a few words? This was one of the funniest threads I've read in a while. :D

Here's one common scenario:

Your contracts, that define the professional relationship between your studio and some other studio/mastering house/client, specifies that you will use specific tools.

The marketplace where this situation exists is sufficiently large to keep certain companies in business, and sufficiently small to create the market forces that drive those prices.

The Waves (and certain other) folks are selling to a market that spends half a million on *room treatment*, 50 grand just on a labeling system for their patchbays (seen that myself in the TV world).

In that market, something like a TDM system or the Waves plugins isn't an especially large investment.

The real argument is not whether they sound good. It's whether they sound $700 better than Blockfish.
The real argument is whether they make any sound at all, relative to the whoosh of a $300,000 contract walking out the door because your studio is not equipped with the specified tools.

BlockFish it's a fave of mine. If it's better or worse than Waves, well i don't care. I guess an experienced engineer does better with crappy tools than i with whatever.

Being better than bad it's easy, being better than excellent it's too damn hard.
Sometimes i buy a €10 wine and i get a tasty wine, the €50 wine could be better, if one can appreciate it but it's better by a tiny margin, that tiny bit it a lot hard to get than one could imagine. The same applies on every job or task... Excellence it is a bitch. If one consider subjectivity on top of that, It's the mother of all bitches.

Not everyone lives in that world you're describing. And not everyone in that world thinks the same as you either. That just isn't plausible.

I mean... I don't quite believe that we've come so far in such a short space of time.. surely even some of the "professionals" still value creativity and risk? Surely some of them still value innovation, which you will not find in any Waves product, but you will find in bountiful amounts on KvR and other such websites.

In essence: Surely they aren't all brainless dickheads with lots of money to spend?

imho waves are expensive because they are updated/debugged frequently and there is a good support.A lot of innovative products lack these 2 points. New products born, new products die... (and the invested value/time is wasted)

yes, but being Waves a company since 1992 you know their products will be supported for a long time yet. If a product was developed by a single guy during his exams,... (just to make an example) you are NOT sure his product will be on the market (or for free) enought....What about a new vst release, a new standard (64 bit or 128 in future), new bug fixed for your new sequencers and so on?
Here the difference in price. You PAY for this...
