No, they're not backwards compatible. I would recommend going with Battery 1 if you can as Battery 1 kits can be read by 2 and 3. You always want to shoot for the format that's going to have the broadest range of compatibility.
Thanks though! Once I hear you have those in Battery or Kontakt formats you have yourself another customer. I rarely use drum machines but the prospect of them being sampled through an MPC60 is just too good to pass up!

Well, in most of the cases the samples are unprocessed - you get the original sounds here - in high quality. You can find a great deal of sounds here nicely organised in kits. I think their usability depends highly on what kind of music you make - I am very much into 80s synth music and for me it's a wonderful collection. Nothing spectacular at first try surely (maybe except the number of drumkits covered) but the sounds blend well with the mixes - and as a bonus there are 9-10 kits with analogue noises and I tend to reach for these sounds quite often. Don't expect compressed, eq-ed sounds (though some of them are)
