Cusis, your mockups are coming along nicely. However, being a GPL project, LMMS can't use commercial fonts like Gill Sans, and the limitations of Qt might mean it can only use fonts already installed on users' computers.

EDIT: Just discovered that Gill Sans is available in a free imitation form.

As pgib said, are there any more small issues that people have had with LMMS in the past, that we can fix in the coming months?

Post

wow, this has come a long way from the last time i tryed it, i found it unusable before but its come along nicely (in both looks & stability), i don't hear a noise when i move things(yet i just messed around with the packaged synths) that's a major issue though if it is happening even though it doesn't really effect functionality it'd make it seem more i dunno amateurish than it is, ASIO support too i heard a bit of static messing around i'm not sure its from the synths being poorly designed or just because of no ASIO, but no ASIO is kinda essential to a viable windows port but what the dev said about the port makes sense cause its called linux multimedia studio after all but ASIO would be nice

btw found 2 bugs dunno if they're known or not but when you click detune mode while playing & click on the piano roll it crashes, & you can't close the GUI window of the zynsub synth from inside it when you click X it asks you if you wanna exit and leave unsaved data but it doesn't actually close when you click yes you gotta click the show GUI button again to close it

i have a few suggestions, the menus are a bit too clunky they could be trimmed down in size quite a bit (especially the chords menu), more presets would be nice for the tb clone theirs a good bit but the others are kinda lacking (theirs none for the emulations afaik) a place for users to submit presets online would be a good idea too, the piano roll could use a few more features & be designed a lil nicer, imo the skin ain't all that bad now compared to what it was the last time i used it but cusis' skin looks like its coming along nicely it'd be a good look to get that implemented, i never really quite got why the step sequencer(pattern mode) is called beat & bassline may be kinda confusing for noobs cause anything can be put on a piano roll in there, a nice solid freeware VA would be a good idea to include in the package, one thing i really like is the auto preview for presets but one thing that'd be a good idea to do is have it set so if you preview one preset/sample right after another the first stops when the seconds triggered (edit: now that i look again a few samples keep playing till their finished and some play as long as you hold the click most function right just a couple don't)

props to all those involved with this imo its just a little bit away from being the first viable freeware host, i've checked it out a few times and its gotten better every time, hopefully all the bugs get worked out in the next few releases because i've been planning to put together a package/list of a completely freeware set-up with all high quality synths, effects, & samples as a resource for broke musicians just haven't yet found a stable host yet

I love the new transport buttons - fantastic job Cusis!

That's where all the songs/samples/presets end up. Also, the latest version of LMMS (which is in development) has a resource browser that connect to that above link and lets you get presets and anything else from within LMMS itself!

Thanks for your feedback, some good points there.

Could someone please either upload, or email me a full size image of the piano roll, and the main sequencer window.

Also anything else so i can continue creating my mock design.

I will add any visual u.i tweaks as i go along with my design. I will then explain exactly what they are and what they do etc.

For example on the mixer, i have added the ability to save and load channel effects states as a whole and individual. Also a drop down of say your most recent presets, and or useful complete presets (say for drums, vocals, synths, etc like in logic).

This is the same for the general settings bit, where you can select from drop down menu, or open saved channel settings.

Also the ability to bounce any selected mixer track to audio.

More will come.

You bet! Please read this entire post before continuing because some of the editors will have major refactorings. First off, here is a screenshot of the four main editors: http://pgiblox.googlepages.com/fullscreen.png

SONG EDITOR:
Song editor will largely remain the same I believe. Feel free to rearrange the "Track Operations Panel" if desired, this is the area in the left-margin of the tracks. and it differs depending on if the track is "Instrument", "Automation", or "BB TracK".

The Songeditor, and other editors that feature a "TimeLine" get an upgrade. With proper timesignature and tempo support we require something like this: http://pgiblox.googlepages.com/new-timeline2.png This is a VERY early screenshot. But, Time is listed on the top, then the Bar:Beats, then finally a spot for Meter and Tempo changes. The text "140" and "2/2" in the screenshot should actually be movable markers. When integrated, the gridlines for Bar:Beat will continue down into the display area for tracks.

BB EDITOR:
The Beat+Bassline editor will probably not be change much. The only refactoring I'm considering right now is to be able to change the length of the BB-Pattern completely instead of one track at a time. So, there may be an LCD on the toolbar with the current length.

AUTOMATION EDITOR:
Like the song editor, this one features the new Time-Line. If we get lucky, then we will have vector-based editing of Automation tracks for 1.0.0. So maybe a variant with steps and a variant with vector would be good?

PIANO ROLL:
Another editor with a new Timeline. A nice juicy piano would be nice. A feature we plan to add eventually is to dim-out piano-keys (and possibly whole rows) if the note doesn't belong in the current key. This is a feature to ease music composition. Notice the "Note: Volume" text. That is actually clickable and can go between "Volume" and "Panning".

GENERAL STUFF:
Feel free to innovate some. Fresh ideas are great. For example, we may rearrange toolbars on the windows.. possibly removing the transport buttons from the individual editors (This is just an example).

Just for fun, here is where the current, unfinished, Cusis theme currently stands. This is, of course, based on your older mockups. I may shelf these changes and make a generic black theme at some point in time. DON'T let these screenshots influence your new work; they are just here for fun.

Good work. We can always reserve the artwork for some features and not integrate them until we add the actual features ;-)
More will come.
I Can't wait!

Can you post a full-size without sharpening? For me, or something.

I hope you are keeping unsharpened versions? Looking good otherwise.

Cusis, looks stunning, as usual :)

If that theme was implemented, LMMS would be the best-looking DAW on Linux, and possibly the best-looking on any platform.

its all vector and bitmap, so the source file is completely flexable, nothing is flattened but these renders.
