in the future, please just use google yourself. thx

it says here - "REAPER versions 0.xx are available as freeware. When we release v1.0 the license will change to shareware, but you can freely use REAPER versions 0.1-0.99 for free."
and in this thread of the official cockos forum, it is stated: "Versions before 1.0 that is up to 0.999 where indeed free."
of course, considering how much the face and functionality of reaper has changed over the years and versions, i don't think the 0.xx versions are really representative for the current reaper. BUT, nonetheless, they are free to use.
Reaper user? Get my free JSFX plug-ins, also available via ReaPack extension.

Deathbliss wrote: Linux dual-boot install to try Ardour and Rosegarden is proving to be a pain in the arse. So far all I know is that you need a Live CD or USB specific version to install Linux from a USB stick. Otherwise the good 'ol CD install works - if you have a CD or DVD drive which I do not. Also it is impossible to find out if there is a patch or BIOS or something I can install on my Gateway 450RGH so that it can boot from the USB drive. So far it looks as though it can't. Another option is running Linux through Windows or running it from USB both of which have problems. So I'm giving up on Linux for now. Oh and for anyone else pursuing this further, also be aware that you need a processor with PAE support to install most of the Music Production Linux distros.

You dont need a CD/USB to instal Linux Ubuntu, they have a app that will instal even inside Windows, I think it is called Wubi or something.

Anyway if you dont have that many resources be carefull because while it is relatively safe and secure it is easy to make mistakes or if you want to return to Windows only you will need USB/CD drives.

BTW if you have such strong feeling about paid/free software why are you using Windows :?:

@Deathbliss-i think it's good you're trying to make a useful thread, and i think your hearts in the right place, but i think you need to do a bit more research and testing first.
spend a few weeks downloading and trying them all out, then you'll be able to right more usefull 'reviews'.(i didn't actually mind your descriptions,it's good to say what you feel, and you can always adjust them as you go).
don't get put off my the flack,
have some fun testing them all out.;)
all the best.

Well it came with my laptop... And the laptop before that... And the computer before that... And the computer before that... And the computer before that...

Also I'm a gamer. Yes, I admit it, I'm 30+ years old and I still like to play video games, although with the crap they keep releasing my interest is waning... But I digress! There are no 100% functional and fully free OSes, last time I looked, that could install and run Windows games. When they make one that I can install and run any game on, from Drakan to Unreal Tournament 3, I'll be the first one to migrate to the new OS. Or at least one of the first 100 or so...

Added Reaper free, thanks for the information. I made you guys Google it because you're the ones who want it added. My focus is on finding every free piece of music creation software I can, and then trying to find tutorials for everything.

The reviews were removed a few days ago and all that's under each program now are the facts I have personally verified. Check the updated first post of this thread, and read the UPDATE section at the bottom to follow the changes.

I appreciate your feedback and advice -

Live Professor by Ifoundasound. Can't record I think, but it does well on hosting. Might have been mentioned, but there is barbed wire on page 1 so I cannot leave this page, I will sleep here in a tent tonight.

Eh? And looking into Live Professor.

@Zynewave Podium Free advocates...

[:x]So I tried to install the program just to make everyone happy and guess what? First I got a Windows Installer error, and this is the only program out of my entire list to give me such an error.

So I started up the Windows Installer Service and ran the installer again only to find the first screen covered by a popup that said," Invalid Drive G:"! No way to select another drive or to do anything.

It looks like this beloved program you all love so much can't even install, like a horse that never leaves the gate once it opens or a guy that can't... Well you know...

Looked around the Zynewave site for an install guide, Googled the error in various ways, no help so I give up. I can't add a program to the list that can't even install.

I'm done with Podium Free unless someone helps me with the install issue I'm having. I don;t have the time or energy to fight this. I added it to the list with a warning. Only in Usine Free and Podium Free have I left anything resembling a comment. You don't like it tough![/:x]

One thing I should mention here... I am appreciative and thankful for all your suggestions, including Reaper and Podium Free. You have all provided valuable feedback and information, thank you!

P.S.
I do apologize for being such a stick-in-the-mud about certain things, and I want you all to know I never meant to come across as mean, ungrateful, offensive, or ________ (insert negative aspect here.) Try to understand that searching for stuff for hours at a time but coming up with very little besides a huge headache makes a person somewhat unpleasant.

Not to mention that every time I find something promising I either see a huge list of limitations in the free version, or I install a promising program only to find it is completely useless to me. It's kind of like having 100 presents at Christmas only to open each one and find some unwanted article of clothing. After a while you can't even smile anymore.

So 1 of the most popular reasons :D. One of mine too, plus I cant get a Windows DAW working on Linux :(.

Anyway I would advice you to get one of those older laptops (probably even the oldest one) and try to put linux Ubuntu or LinuxMint in there, then get ready for a surprise.

Got some sort of infection I think. I keep getting VSS service errors when that service was set to Manual and has since been set to Disabled. ClamWin found a virus in Java when I rebooted into Safe Mode, but Spyware Terminator found nothing more than some spyware. Maybe one of these rootkits or something.

Anyhow while I address this and attempt to go back to a previous image there will be very little in the way of updates here. Besides, tomorrow is Turkey Day. The official start of Christmas IMO. So you guys are on your own for a while. I'll come back and fill in the details for Reaper and Podium Free if perhaps this bug was causing me install issues. I know Reaper was acting weird after I installed it - didn't even show up in Add/Remove programs!

Be sure to thoroughly check any of the programs I listed in the last few days, as this infection, if that is what it is, would have come from one of them. The list includes Podium, Rack Performer, and Reaper - can't remember what else I installed and tried recently other than those. I will scan my entire Music download directory and my tutorial directories from YouTube and try to track this down.

I guess that's it for now - have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
