Are all melodies taken?

There is an endless amount of melodies I guess. Take the notes of any songs, change the accents or velocity, bah! it's new. Often even not similar. I don't say that it's a way of making tunes, just a suggestion that THE melody is not just a sequence of notes.

Then get out of 12-equal temperament and voila- the kamasutra needs new illustrations.@midnight wrote:It's ridiculous to think every melody has taken. Try getting out of common time signatures (3/4, 4/4) start writing in 7/8, 6/4, 9/8, 13/8 etc.... get crazy with it.
Even in 4/4 you can write original melodies, by lengthening shortening notes etc, it is definitely possible.

I believe most melodies that make sense to us have been used in one form or another. Many contemporary artists strive to separate their works from the more "traditional" melodies and sounds, but often result in music that sound disorganized. Many of the popular songs of this era still thrive on recycled themes and melodies of the past.
