Try STN - Powered bus program.

I tried that one, It's more than saturation and I think it changes the sound way too much with the pre-set EQ.

For me it's VCC or Vintage Warmer on the master buss. Waves Kramer for an old school vibe.

On channels; VCC, Mixsaturator, Vintage Warmer, Decapitator or Roundtone work well. Sometimes I use 2 or 3 at different stages to achieve greater density.

I really like Satson, but it's got a showstopper of a bug on my rig :(. If I was sparse on CPU (say on a laptop), Satson would be my first choice.

Looking forward to ubk-1 vst; looks and sounds immense. Slate's tape plug should also be interesting :D

Not on the master out/Bus for me personal preference. On sub-mixes/groups yes indeedy and then it depends on what it is i am going for so there is no single one i can say is a FTW

All the best to all :)

Sorry, but if I may repeat a question from earlier today... to the extent that there is one, what is a recommended typical approach, or at least a typical statring point, for where a saturator works best in a master buss FX chain?

I'm somewhere between a newb and an ok intermediate hobbyist, looking to improve. My typical master chain is signal >> EQ >> reverb (if any) >> compressor >> peak limiter. I think of a saturator as being more in the EQ family, so I have used saturators after the EQ, sometimes to good effect, other times not (e.g the compression can really up the hiss).

I know, there are no rules, whatever sounds good is good etc etc; having said that, given the number of combinations involved just in ordering these plugs (and then adjusting them accordingly), guidelines re at least starting ooints would be most welcome.

One other thing -- no one has mentioned Tonebooster's saturator, Ferox. It's inexpensive but can really sound nice sometimes -- perhaps a good choice for those of us who can't afford all the big bioys' toys (at least all of the time). Any opinions?

Umm.. I guess you are still stuck in Nebula 1.0 land. Try the latest 3.5 version if you are a customer. Compressor now compress. Tapes now saturate (albeit not extremely so and there is no proper tape clipping like in the real deal) and equalizers have no attack release sliders/knobs and work just beautifully.

You could start off by downloading the fully free program called Zodiac Console Compressor and testing that one. You can make it slam like there's no tomorrow. :)

Which is why you need to de-emphasize it with an eq. Either pre or post. :)

sorry,but no 1.0 land.../I have still V.3.0 on my old-now not much used PC/
Its nice to hear that 4 years after I got this plugin there is 1 compressor for download which is working as expected
Sadly Ive stopped using this most promising and sametime most confused plugin in the world after short testing period...and becouse recently we got a lot of good emulations of vintage gear from IKM,Softube,Waves etc I dont think there is one good reason to look back... :)
Anyway thax for your info-I had a talk with Giancarlo last year about compression and he told me that "only character of compressors" is possible to obtain...but no proper compression

Saturation plugin on the master bus? Never put saturation on the master bus, simple as that.

The tube stage in BootEqMKII is good (along with the low-frequency exciter it has) but can get a little "smeary" with the sound and affects how distinct the instruments sound...though it can be used to cover a bad mix in some cases because of that.

Thanks for that. You sound pretty expereinced with it -- would you mind sharing a bit more re how you set up the master buss fx chain? In which order do you put FerricTDS? Also, do you use its dynamics, and if so, do you put additonal bus compression on with something else?

Grateful for any advice...
Usually on the master buss, I'll do a touch of Sindo V.1 first, then Ferric TDS, then an eq and then ModernDynakiller mixed in to taste depending on how much mix energy I'm looking for (pretty typical master buss chain for me).

It's just that many ME's consider it as 'saving the song', and I agree. Put saturation as much as you want for individual tracks but leave the master clean. Your master should sound as you want without any added saturation, it's more transparent that way. But hey, there's no rules, so do what you want, I'm only recommending it.

That was 1 year ago. Things have changed, dramatically! But hey, you are entitled to not look into a product which has finally matured nicely. It's your loss.

(just in case you haven't followed my posts about nebula for the past few years: I was one of THE MOST CRITICAL people when it came to Nebula and compressors. Heck I was most likely THE FIRST user, even way before the larger beta team, to try and sample compressors without success. Now they work well enough. You still can't get extremely fast compressor attacks and releases done properly, like in the micro second region but everything else works just fine and sounds ridiculously good!). :)

Not sure about that one. Mix engineers the world over have done the infamous "slamming the SSL stereo buss" and a big part of what they achieve is coloration from driving the circuit hard.

Now, as to whether you can even get close to that kind of sound with plug-ins, that's a different (and probably infinitely debatable) question.

So you wouldn't put a compressor on the master bus? Because I'm sure you know that compression is one type of saturation.

And I'm also sure you know that there are some saturations that are actually *designed* for the master bus.

So, in other words, you're like, wrong, and stuff.
