Did you see how surprised everyone was when Susan Boyle could actually sing? They were all about to throw rotten fruit at her just because she didn't look like Fergie (no the other one) or a ho from snoop dawgs latest foshizzle drizzle bizzle schnizzle dancing posse.

I guess if one is to 'blame' an entire genre for the downfall of music then lay it on all music genres. If one is to 'blame' an entire decade for the downfall of music then 'blame' it on all decades...and so forth.rifftrax wrote:Dang. I guess sucks for all you guys. I'm here enjoying the current era of music tremendously. I feel bad for the rest of you. Must be tough having to live in the past to get any joy out of music at all.
Popular music has been with us since who knows when, really. There was always some kind of suckage that plagued those of us with more 'refined' ears.
I really do believe some here need to take a new drug called Sumbunall...it will relax you and make it so that this debate can be a little more saner.
Sumbunall= Some But Not All...

That's got to get the award for 'biggest old fart in the thread' comment so far...osiris wrote:What put the final nail in music's coffin was rap. Which meant anyone without talent could just speak their stream of consciousness set to a beat and release it as a single.
You only really have to listen to the large number of people who *think* they can rap to realize that it's nowhere near as easy as most people seem to think, and without the development in rap I think music from the 80s through to now would be very different. It had a huge impact on how music developed, both in good and bad ways, but it's far from a genre performed by the talentless (until you look at rap after 2000 in which I think it's pretty fair comment to say that those who perform it are talenless, but mostly because their names are Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, etc.)

Looks like you totally missed a lot of what I was saying. So I'll make a post straightening it out for you.
I want you to really think about this: How do you get an inventive artist out of someone who just does what Deadmau5 told him to do? I'm gonna be Mr.Ethics for you again, and ask how can someone like that be considered an artist at all.
By the way... what's the difference between freestyle music and freestyle rap? Hip pop and pop rap? Mafioso and gangsta?

I like the closing diatribe based on me saying the '80s were a big oppressive force, when everything I actually said was the opposite of that. Amazing writing. Killer comprehension. I dug it.
Eligh and Amp Live are a rapper and producer duo. Timbaland and Wyclef are "Hip Hop" producers that make half of their career doing with R&B what I was mentioning. I'll be a little bit more fair. These producers haven't changed since Missy, because she was evolved somewhat from Babyface.rifftrax wrote:Have you ever heard of Eligh and Amp Live?
So, you're an ace pilot of missing the point. No, it's not uninventive because I don't like the person or because the motivations are shitty. And no, we don't have to get into a discussion about how an artist's motivations DO change the cultural context of what the music will end up meaning. I don't feel like our conversation can shoulder something like that. You think I care if the good music I listen to was made by a sold-out hipster with illusions of grandeur vs. a coke-fueled guitar lead guitarist who is a dick to all his fans? Hell no I don't care. I'm talking about music not people. Sorry you can't get past that. Not my problem.
I want you to really think about this: How do you get an inventive artist out of someone who just does what Deadmau5 told him to do? I'm gonna be Mr.Ethics for you again, and ask how can someone like that be considered an artist at all.
Well, I should have expected that. So, you counted all those genres, and I appreciate that. But you do realize I asked you to name off 24 genres, and you gave me a comprehensive list of hip-hop genres that suggests only 40 even exist? You've really illustrated your point colorfully. How about something I found on wikipedia. Gee that was easy.
By the way... what's the difference between freestyle music and freestyle rap? Hip pop and pop rap? Mafioso and gangsta?
It's relevant in a topic about whether music is stagnant or not. Not every good artist needs to be a revolution but you should be able to come up with 12 dudes in a lively genre. Oh, and I like how much you're protesting this one.you want me to now define music groups that are "making waves" for their respective genre? What the hell? Good music isn't good music unless...
Haha, I'm just a crazy boy thinking our viewpoints oppose each other, and that you're on the side suggesting everything is okay.Who said anything about defending a genre? Why do I need to defend modern hip-hop?
That's not quite the same thing as just blurting out "dubstep" every time there's an open-ended music discussion.Funny, because I also noticed that you seem completely preoccupied with your sob-story of how hip-hop turned out all wrong.
I'm not gonna call you a sucker. But your inexperience shows when you call Skrillz "a drastically different style of musical work," and parroting off the word "dubstep" everywhere you walk illustrates your naivete....to see the creative thinking that went into a drastically different style of musical work. Maybe that makes me a sucker.
There's way more alright music available now. There really aren't way more atom-smashing new genres and artists like there were in the beginning of the '80s. The '80s wrecked, and I like to think I wouldn't have wasted them like it looks you have.I'm not saying there wasn't good music in the 80's. I'm not saying there isn't bad music now. I'm just saying there is an absurd amount more good music available now. WAY more.
They dominated. Uhh... they were more good. It's obvious you have some issues bro. "The 80's wrecked what we have now"? Seriously? Boo-hoo.
I like the closing diatribe based on me saying the '80s were a big oppressive force, when everything I actually said was the opposite of that. Amazing writing. Killer comprehension. I dug it.
I'll get over myself when you stop dismissing everyone with a complaint with: "YOU JUST GOTTA DIG DEEPER."Get over yourself.

Couldn't disagree more. Missing persons was a quirky fun band with killer musicians with pop till you drop. The idea of crazy drums as the forefront wasn't readily explored and nobody could/will ever pull it off like mr bozzioosiris wrote:

I'm already too invested in this thread, but I gotta respond to this. Yeah, Lil Wayne refuses to do anything remotely high-brow, I get that. But The Carter III was last decades The Chronic. He's about as talented as Timbo, only he was newer and more exciting in the '00s.robojam wrote:talentless... Lil Wayne
