I don't think that I could call omnisphere ground breaking technically.....its to me like the apple computer, all the right features with a workflow and to me in omnisphere a sound second to none....I don't know what the filters are modeled on, but I love the sound of many, especially the juicy ones which may have been modeled on some Roland stuff... I have no idea, I don't care.. for me it is how it sounds..... at the end of the day if you are making music for a listening audience, none of them really care how much new innovative exciting things the synth can do.....

I think despite features, every synth has a different sounding engine, and I guess from being a Roland enthusiast, spectrasonics stuff just naturally appeals to me as me and Eric would have similar sonic tastes....

However all of that said, I do know of many very technical sound designers and composers who roll their own patches in omnisphere and love doing so.

Btw, also I don't think I really see non kvr-forum based software having pages of technical discussions.. like the NI stuff for instance, unless they happened before my time. I usually see long pages here on either freeware or from developers who have or had a forum here.

I have to agree with both of the last posts. It isn't anything technically amazing and the VA engine and subtractive synthesis components aren't too special. However it is a joy to use. I do personally quite like the filters, they can really do some crazy things with the right sound sources. And it does have some pretty interesting things you can do with the envelopes. I personally approach it like any other basic subtractive synths, except that it has a huge amount of sound sources to use as the starting point rather than just basic waveforms. With good filters and lots of modulation potential, especially with those crazy envelopes and a good array of source processing like ring mod, fm, waveshaping, you can really get some cool results fast. Not to mention cool extras like the orb and a ton of effects. And that's why it's fun, not too technical, but things just happen.

It's not the be-all and end-all of synths by any stretch. But if you compare the sample library alone that you get with Omnisphere to many other Sample Libraries like Sample Logic, Heavyocity etc., Omnisphere is a pretty good value.

So I am creating a sound right now in Trillian and playing with the modulation and filters, and it is an amazing synth. I don't own Omni but really the synth engine is very good and this is not just some rompler. I would suggest if someone is on the fence regarding getting Omnisphere have they considered Trillian yet? It is much more than a bass synth, with lots of waveforms from a wide variety of instruments and the same (afaik) sound sculpting tools and effects. It is high on RAM but really surprisingly low on CPU. And it sounds POWERFUL!

So, another problem with omni.........you want to browse presets, something you think you can use or modify later.

Then you get all "excited" and want to lay down a song. Next thing you know you STILL HAVEN'T GONE THROUGH 10% of the DAMN presets and don't know shit about the god darned thing

I'd suggest try and make your own presets, you will learn all about it then. It may 'just' be a subtractive synth but there is a lot of depth in the waveforms, filters, mod matrix, envelope editor, What sound are you after? Do you mostly use presets?
